My job is easy-peazy and boring as hell. Like Mora, some nights my job entails nothing more than reading a book between spurts of work, and other nights I'm so busy I don't have time to even take breaks. I like my job because I got it myself and I have a lot of flexibility in my schedule when I need it. I hate it because it gets very tedious and I have nowhere to go in a promotional sense. I also hate it because I can't do anything fun during the week with my friends who all work during the day and get off right when I'm clocking in for my 8 hours.

EDIT: There's an insanely cheesy video of my office on the website up top. Only one person in that video still works there, and none of the machinery is the same. God, that video must be five years old.

Lol, I just recently left a job I worked for 12 years. It was a good solid job, but I decided to kick myself into doing something a little more challenging and/or make more money. (People do wierd stuff when they turn 30)

                  Southern California Edison

                  Position
                  Meter Reader.
I read electric meters using an electronic handheld, which I then bring back to the office, and then someone else takes that information to determine how much a person's/company's electric bill should be.

                  Evaluation
It's good for the most part. Starts off $13.45 an hour, now currently making $15.55 an hour. Can meet a lot of nice people and get to know the areas of a city a whole lot better. When I am out reading, I am by myself the whole day. I don't have supervisors breathing down my neck. A lot of the houses I read have their meters on the left or right side, sometimes the very front. basically I get paid to walk around reading things. no real effort there. Hell, sometimes I can finish an area early and spend the rest of the work day either at home if it's close enough, or just go find some shaded spot and rest in my truck (company vechicle) with the AC and radio on. Apartments and business buildings are nice. All the meters in that one building are grouped in one room, so I don't have to move around looking for meters, plus I can read them all much faster like that.

I'm gonna rant a bit now...
But for some reason the people building some of the houses thought placing meters in the backyard was a good idea. Now for the fun. For me most of the time, this is no problem. The owners know why I'm there and understand I only have to be in their yards for a few seconds and then I'm out. But one main concern is dogs. Very territorial, and can be very mean. The company used to let their employees use a pepper spray for dogs, but some ended up abusing this, so all we get now is a dog stick (plastic stick with a tennis ball at the end, so that they bite it instead of us). I got bit once. When I first got started a dog ran quickly from around a corner and snapped at my hand. I got ****** and smacked it on the head with the stick. But the thing is, the majority of people aren't home, they're at work. So it gets tricky getting into the yard to read a meter while keeping an eye on the dog at the same time with no one to put them away. But because of this, you learn to watch a dog's actions more closely. Some dogs will bark like mad, showing their teeth, running towards you, but the very second they take even the smallest step back, you know right away they are bluffing. So I yell at them, smacking the gate or ground with the dog stick to scare them off. But the good thing about some homes with meters in the back is that from one yard I can look over the walls, and using a scope, can read meters on the houses to the side of where I am at, and even 3 house behind. helps save time and trouble.

Other times I'll run into an owner who just so happens to be home, but not once have ever seen me before so they freak out and think I might be breaking in to their home. The majority of people aren't even aware that people like me who work for the electric, gas, or water company come to their homes every month (Do YOU people???). Other times they think I am with the gas company even though the logo on my shirt, hat, and me yelling out "Edison!" as I enter a yard basically say the name of the company that gives them electricity (people just have no idea who they are giving their money to).

Now, for some houses with an owner AND an aggressive dog in the yard is not fun. Dogs get protective. I see dogs at a house once a month, and even then I know more about it then the owners themselves. A lot of times I will tell them I need to go into the yard, and ask them to put the dog away. A lot of people will go on to say the dogs are fine, they are friendly. I just want to smack them when they finally see how mean their dog gets, to which they ALL reply "Oh my god! My dogs never done that before!" They've had their dog for years, and I see them for like a minute a month and I have to explain to them how to deal with the dogs.

With summer here, and school out, there are a lot more kids. I hate going into yards with kids. Not because how the kids are, it's how the parents could potentially be if they see some guy in the yard with their kids. So I always have to make sure to go to the door and let them know I have to go in. This just makes my day longer though.

                  Ok, I'm pretty much done.

I do. I set traps for them, like coating the entire meter in peanut butter, set up a sprinker right next to it, or even cover it in wrapping paper.

knowing you're one of those people makes me feel kind of bad about it though.

                          Re: The Job Topic

sprinklers actually feel good, though. it gets hot when i'm out walking almost the whole day. peanut butter is nothing. Some meters are completely covered in bird ****. wrapping paper can be torn off, I see them every now and then.

Also, if you do anything to prevent someone from reading a meter, and they can't actually read it (mainly just access problems if they have trouble getting in normally), your bill is estimated. And sometimes it can be higher than what you SHOULD have paid for that month, so you're basically screwing yourself. But my work wants us to actually try to get the reads, but 1 or 2 meters we can't read is generally overlooked.

                          *Edit*
Oh! I almost forgot! Some people's backyards are just TRASH! junk piled everywhere, no one picking up after their dogs (the smell is terrible, even when I'm not in the yard), and some people just seem to never have heard of a lawn mower. I swear, I'm walking through grass and weeds that go higher than my waist. One of these days I'm gonna walk right into some ticks or even a nest of fleas, I know it.

the people who check our meter always check despite the stuff that I put in their way (like a pile of bikes). I even got a "nice effort" note left on the meter once.
