Sweet jesus, my CD/DVD drive was being naughty!

May be helpful if it ever happens to anyone, so I'll post this here.

I have a HP laptop, and everything was working great. Then about a few weeks ago, my CD/DVD drive crapped out on me for some odd reason. Out of the blue. I looked up the properties, and it mentioned that there may have been something missing or corrupted, and it also said it was a Code 39. When I try to play a CD or DVD, it does not start up automatically, nor could any of my programs find the drive. I open up My Computer and the drive is not showing up there. So looking to restore files and such from the DVD disc it came with is out of the question.

Now at that point, i had no clue what the hell it was talking about. I tried going through microsoft and hewlet packard's websites looking for a solution, but of course i end up getting the run around at those sites, can never find any answers. Finally went through Help and Support, from the start menu and had it connect online and scan my computer for anything wrong. It see's that my CD/DVD drive is not working properly, and suggested I uninstall the drive and have it reinstalled. I do this, and it reinstalls, but still, Code 39. Grrrrr!

I think maybe it's just the cd/dvd player itself that's screwing up, so I try an external cd/dvd burner, but still I get the code 39. Now comes manually searching online for help about code 39, but a lot of sites come up for prices on junk for 39.99. FINALLY today I found THIS LINK that explains how to fix this problem for windows XP and 2000.

Basically open up the Registry Editor (go to Run, then type in regedit) to find and delete two specific keys. Then after going through and looking for what seems like a million folders....

To delete the offending keys, open the Registry and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. . Delete the keys named UpperFilters and LowerFilters and reboot.
I basically followed that direction, rebooted, and now everything works great.
Maybe I should have asked here if someone knew, but anyone have this happen to them?
