Let me say this. I know, I know, I KNOW. That when your team loses, the initial reaction is to blame an external force. "Clearly my team was better - someone else MADE them lose!" I've done it a million times. "It's the ref's fault!"
But. Really. This game was not decided by the refs. Watch the last three minutes again. The Heat did not get any more calls than the Bulls. It was a perfect storm of the Bulls losing their way on offense and the Heat making ridiculous shots. Seriously, if Lebron or Wade miss just ONE of those shots down the stretch - the Bulls win. But they didn't.
Also, if you're going to say "THE NBA WANTED THE HEAT TO WIN OLOL." (Which is an argument I've been reading a lot). Really? No. The NBA wants to make money. They would make much more money if this series went 7 games instead of 5. Also, Chicago is a gigantic major market (much bigger than Miami or Dallas). So having them in the Finals is a win.
Finally, Dallas "gets" just as many calls as Miami because of Dirk. That guy is a free throw MACHINE (59-61 in the OKC series) and gets to the line as much as anyone in the league.
I honestly think the Mavericks should be the favorite in this series as far as matchups go. They have scorers galore. Their bench actually scores better than their starters! Yeah, Miami has incredible defense and homecourt so it should be a long series. But, on paper, I'd say Dallas is clearly the better squad.
However, on paper Chicago was clearly the better squad (including having the MVP of the league) and Miami just tore their hearts out four games in a row. Which is absolutely crazy. Not only is Miami a gritty team (Joel Anthony and Udonis Haslem are both twice as scrappy as anyone on Dallas except MAYBE Chandler) but they have Wade and Lebron to close games. And having the absolute best player on the court (not necessarily the best TEAM) usually translates to wins.
So it comes down to the bench, rebounding and closing games. Can Dirk and Terry close games better than Wade and Lebron?
Yeah, the advantage the Heat have is that Wade and Lebron both have the ability to do CRAZY AMAZING CRAP at a moment's notice. And on top of that - they have Bosh who is capable of dropping 30/12 on any night.
The only person that Dirk has that's capable of dropping 30 is Terry...and he doesn't play much defense or rebound.
LeBron and Wade sent Dirk into a rage. They needed to be a little more subtle about thinking they had already won, like the Pistons when they had Darko (a.k.a The Human Victory Cigar).
Yes, LeBron, Darko has a ring. So don't get cocky.
