Fan fiction is a blight upon the internet. I hate it with every fiber of my being, and I may even say I think that people who write it are complete and utter retards. From the examples above, I'd say this observation is pretty accurate.

I'm under the impression that a lot of fan fic is written by adolescents who don't fully recognize bad writing and/or simply don't have any talent for writing, and it often involves some form of wish fulfillment, hence the Mary Sues and self-insert sex fantasies. So I'm willing to write it off a little, I just completely ignore it as crap.

This is also true. I do know a few people who wrote fics in their teenage years and have grown up to be horrified by it, so you're right. It is crap! And we have the power to just ignore it.

What's worse about a fanfic is it's a single person writing about whatever they want. It doesn't even need to make sense. At least in forum roleplays there's more people which warrants the participants all adhere to some form of plot and so the characters may not always fit but the plot at least flows and makes some sort of sense.

If I felt like wasting the time, I'd write some fanfic as deliberate Canon Defilement of Twilight, just to **** off the fans. I even have a basic plot: somehow Jacob Black gets neutered by a veterinarian, and I'd throw in a bunch of silly cliches about getting your dog fixed. I'd much rather drag Edward and Bella through the mud repeatedly, but there's just so much more sick humor potential in having a dog-boy castrated IMO.

I wrote a fanfic when I was fifteen. I'm a former retard. It's okay, I carry the shame of my past. T^T That is partially why I loathe them now, because I can't believe I would write such drivel in my youth. OH GOD. WHY.

I'm pretty sure I wasn't a retard then, as I took my writing as seriously now as I did when I wrote them. As in, actually aiming for a writing career.

I've quit writing fanfics as I would rather spend time on my own original stories. That and some writers are really uppity about fanfics. And being a writer more or less guarantees lawsuits at some point anyway, so no need to compound any problems with legally grey areas.

Unless they're deliberatly trolling a fanfic community with something written intentionally to anger them in every way possible, and it's done well. Good trolling is an art.
