    Computer Problems v2.0

So, I have this sinking feeling that I know the answer all ready, but I am going to ask this anyway.

Lately I've been having problems with my computer. The last few times it has been on, after some use, the screen would get glitchy. As in, the entire screen distorts and discolors, and soon would go to black (the monitor's power button looks like it is in standby mode). The comp seems to work fine after I turn it back on, but it may end up going permanently soon.

So, what problem does this sound like? I'm afraid the word 'motherboard' will be used, but eh, its old, what can you do?

Might be your video card. It might be about to go kaput.

Well the video card was loose. You know, the screws that secure them into the slot were gone (?!). So, does that sound like it could have been the problem? The screen freeze hasn't happened... yet.

It did it again, so um, yeah. Probably the card going bad, hope it is over the motherboard going out.

Also, when I try to connect the monitor to the motherboard, the picture doesn't go past the opening Win XP logo, it just goes to a black screen. I did go to setup and change video configuration from PCI to Onboard. So... what stupidly obvious thing am I missing?

Sounds like you need to reboot your computer

Are you sure it's not the monitor?

                  It might be.

And Cutter, I rebooted the comp multiple times, though that might have just been you being a smartass.

Is it a CRT monitor, or a HD/flatscreen/LCD?

I've had...no kidding...7 CRT monitors die on me, all in new and intriguing ways. I had one that would lose vertical hold until I smacked it. I've had had one where the picture shrank and turned sepiatone...that one almost burst into flame. I've had them go all out of wack as far as trapezoid level (or whatever). I've had one that was half image and half black, with a bright line in between.

                      It's flatscreen, but not hd.
