Motorists Hit Jackpot With Coins On Highway

It's definitely a funny scene for the mind's eye ("Money!") but at the same time this sickens me.

Do Southern Italians lack that much decency? When I dropped a bagful of coins (and the proceeded to splatter everywhere) in the middle of a busy street festival in Japan, people old and young alike swarmed around and raced to pick them up... and handed them right back to me. (And these were not tiny coins--the highest were 500 yen or about $6 US)

Now there's a good bunch of people!

But to see an overturned truck where someone might have been badly hurt, and stop your vehicle, only to horde some of the money for yourself and race off with it? I really hope they can find the culprits and, as Karr once said, "throw this trash in jail".

Is it just me, or after reading this:

a truck carrying 2.5 million euros in coins overturned on a highway in southern Italy and motorists picked up the money like mushrooms.

Well, no self-respecting person would do it, period. There's a level of desperation that maybe justifies (or at least excuses) it, but absolutely no one with a car is there yet.

Eh, in some places people would definitely make off with the loot, but not around where I live (or so I think). I can guarantee someone would take some film of it and put it up on YouTube, however!

I wonder if those Japanese people would stop and try to help. At the very least, I know for sure they wouldn't grab it.

I feel you're missing the mark on a few different dimensions here.

A) The Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor has absolutely nothing to do with the honor and respect of the Japanese people. Not exactly sure where you came up with the idea to try and make that construction.

B) Honor and respect don't have as much to do with stealing from a tragedy scene as do decency, kindness, and humanity.

C) The cultural differences at play here are very real. I've seen it firsthand. It's not something people made up, and it's not exaggerated. I'm not saying "The Japanese People" are some superior race of humans or anything; the culture felt like it could really get suffocating at times. But when things are going bad for everyone, there are few societies that can weather it better, and it's for reasons like this. If Katrina would have hit Yokohama, there would have been a lot less looting.

D) It's the mentality that it's okay to make off with peoples' money without doing anything to earn it that got Capitalism into pretty much every single problem it is facing today.

Banks are the only ones that want you to feel bad about taking money away from them. :V

2.5million euro and all they made away from was 10k? must of had the bulk of the cash locked up. im not sure how much a brinks truck moves around here in north america but it seams like a lot of cash that should of deserved a small escort. i guess people dont steal coin because they are so heavy.

people are pretty brutal, greedy, and generally horrid. im surprised japan had so many good honorable people who give money back if someone drops it. up in canada we do the same, if someone drops a few coins while in a line up we will pick them up and hand them back.

pretty sad that the only thing people do at an accident is loot.

edit: capitalism is really a system that focus on money as the prime motivator, and easily plagued by greed.

No offense everyone but there is a small difference between pocket change on a subway and a massive payout that you can take with little consequence.

Not saying I'd do what they did but that temptation must've been mighty hard to pass up.
