Re: (The) War of the Worlds

No, I mean like... I've always just seen him as the guy who made filsm like Hook, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones... the guy who made summer blockbusters. Having never seen Schindler's List and never really caring for ET or any of his other major films (don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Indiana Jones and Jaws), I've just never been able to look at him and say "I want to be like this guy one day" the same way I've been able to do with like... George Romero or Alfred Hitch****. It's not that I haven't liked his films, I've just never watched them and thought, "wow, that was really impressive" the way I did with War of the Worlds.

    Edit:

You can't say "Hitch****"?! What the hell?!

The censor is stupid and needs adjustments.

I intend to rent this movie when it comes out, but my expectations aren't too high. The original radio broadcast was awesome. It was causing people to act like idiots because they thought it was real. One guy is documented to have driven 85 mph to the location this was ocuring to see what was going on, only to find nothing was happening. I hope this movie plays upon the hysteria of when the first broadcast was aired, otherwise it will lose its lustre.

You can take George Romero seriously as a film maker, but not Speilburg? Wow.

Believe me, people were kinda freaking out in their seats, too. It's not a movie to take young kids do. Which is why you saw everyone taking young kids to it.

              He's not at all alone.

What sort of reactions were there? I'm interested now. I like movies that challenge the initial expectations of those that choose to view them. If it brings back the feeling of hysteria that the original broadcast reportedly did, I'm like so totally gonig to see it.

Some parts of this movie really disturbed me. Like the part with the riot over the car? Jesus Christ. I think the whole, "people are selfish and disgusting" thing is really hard to pull off but this movie pulled it off splendidly.

I guess if you're into cheap over-rated zombie movies.

                  It did it perfectly.

Definitely the disturbing subject matter. Spielburg really doesn't pull too many punches with this movie.

I guess you missed the point of them, then. Except for Day, it had no point. Just Bub.

I get the point, and I still don't see why everyone makes such a big deal.

Saving Private Ryan was such a shlocky crapfest, thank god Spielberg finally pulled his head out of his ass and made WAR OF THE WORLDS.

Naw, but seriously. Good flick, if you're suprised by how it ended you really need to like.. I don't know, I thought the ending of war of the worlds was like universal knowledge.

Edit: I liked the book more, I wish they hadn't reduced the "We'll become their pets" thing to one sarcastic throw away line.

Edit 2: Magus, they're turning Bradburys awesome short story A Sound of Thunder into what looks like a really crappy movie.

"At first it just looked like a picture of a bunch of lily pads, but then I started scraping at it with my pocket knife and the whole painting just sort of spoke to me," Schmidt said. "For the first time, I finally understand what Monet was trying to get across in her work."

It sounds like something I might have posted about.

I won't argue about the merits of Spielberg and Romero but I will say Spielberg sure has a knack for making movies on a variety of subjects instead of one...

And the whole Tim Robbins scene/character is a problem, I feel. At that point the movie hits a wall. However, it does recover.

I saw the movie a few days ago and I thought it was awesome. The only problem I had with it was the ending where they met everyone and they were all unharmed. It just seemed a little unrealistic. I wish there was more resolve to it.
