I'm being punished for something. (yay new computer!)
The graphics card is the problem, it doesn't seem like you'd be able to help.
I replace motherboards in laptops all the time.
At first I thought it was the screen until I seen that the picture was different in each picture. There is a known issue with your model of laptop when it comes to the integrated video card. I recommend not fixing it and just use your hard drives on a new laptop. If you do fix it, it's likely to happen again.

unfortunately, that isnt an option. getting it repaired is the most affordable option, it seems. If I were to get a new computer, I would want a desktop, but I'd need a monitor too. that's expensive.

I have a thin monitor sitting right here that we were going to recycle. If you pay for shipping I could send it your way tomorrow. You could even have the monitor set up as the video output for your laptop if you wanna have a ghetto rig.

I have a desktop that I may get rid of. I am actually trying to trade it for a netbook though I may just buy a netbook. If I don't trade it for a netbook I may trade it for something else.
Edit: That 500GB drive you bought for you laptop will work in a desktop, if you didn't already know that.
It comes with Ubuntu (which is awesome) but there's nothing stopping you from putting Windows on it if you want that, and you can upgrade the video card later. The only thing in that rig I don't like is the default processor choice.
As far as repairing your laptop, if they offer a warranty on their repair then that's fine. Otherwise, I can't recommend fixing it. You may consider buying a motherboard on Ebay and making a project out of it, you may save money that way.

They offer a 90 day warranty on all repairs. not much, I know. and certainly doesnt inspire confidence now that I know this problem will likely come back some day.
If I do get a new desktop, I don't want to get something that would be so low end that I'd be better off replacing it than upgrading it in the future. I don't have a lot of money (actually I have less than none right now, thanks to paypal being extremely stupid), and upgrading a computer will be financially hard in my current position.
Basically what it comes down to is that, well, if I get a new computer, if I couldnt get similar performance to the machine I have now, I don't see any reason to get a new computer. I'm not paying money to downgrade. I did realize the monitor wouldnt be a problem after all, since I could always use my HDTV, if the thing had an HDMI out like my laptop does.
So probably going with a repair, and then save up for a desktop.

I went for a new computer.
HP Elite 150t
21.5 inch monitor
Windows 7
Intel i5-750 processor
4GB RAM
640GB HDD
1.8GB nvidia Geforce GTX 260
It is very nice. Put in Fallout 3, set it to "ultra" and it runs smooth as silk, and blows the PS3 and 360 versions of the game away. that's good. that makes me happy.
