World War II was nothing like the War on Terror. We nuked Japan because it would have cost even more lives to have invaded.

Afghanistan still has rigged elections and the U.S. wants to keep their puppet in charge.

Outside of Kabul, the U.S. has next to no control within Afghanistan, even despite all of the soldiers currently stationed there.

The hashish and opium trades in Afghanistan are thriving, thanks to the "war on drugs" and the high demand for these goods in 1st world countries, and the CIA as always, wants their percentage...

IMO, the best course of action would be to leave.

My comparison of the two was satirical, I'm stating that they're not the threat they're being made out to be.

The reason it's difficult to find a nonviolent solution is because we're doing with a violent situation.

I'm sure our heavily armed troops still stationed there aren't exactly putting the Afghani peoples minds at ease. I'd be hostile too. Mind your own ****in' business America.

No matter what we tell the terrorists, they'll still be strapping bombs to their chests and killing school children. They will always call us infidels, and it's going to be difficult to convince them of otherwise.

I don't believe that this is true, unless their goals are downright unrealistic I think everyone could come to a reasonable comprimise, if everyone would just sit down and listen to eachother. But even so, let them blow up their own schools. That's awful counterproductive to the growth of their society. We have our own problems to deal with right now. We shouldn't be trying to save the world until we're at least sure we can save ourselves.

You are basing your assumption that humans are always reasonable, rational beings. We aren't. I consider myself a pretty reasonable, rational person. Yet, I can tell you right now that I have been highly irrational on several occasions. Some people aren't rational at all.

Some people hold their particular beliefs so deeply that they will not listen to any rational argument. See: Mr. Tumey from The Langoliers or the Dwarves from the last Narnia book.

The US has basically dominated the middle east for the last seventy years. In many cases this has led to the common middle eastern man getting screwed over.

They can't fight back with traditional means. They don't have our nukes or our tanks or our well trained, well funded military. So, they have to turn to terrorism. Just like we did when we created this country.

Just do some reading on US-middle eastern foreign relations. Then you'll understand why they're mad.

YOU need to do some research, and realize that it is a tiny majority that is blowing itself up, and I'm damned sure its not for the reasons you think. There are millions of people over there who just want to get on with their lives, and are not to appreciative of the people who claim to be driving out the "Great Satan" who is ruining there lives by blowing them (the people, not the us) up.

Do you really think that Iraqis, Afghans, and Pakistanis are so stupid as to think that the Taliban and the rest have their best interests at heart? When they routinely kill people and destroy their homes and businesses? When they shoot men in the street because they didn't help them beat a woman who wasn't with a male relative?
