I'm looking for a summer job, one to pay my rent with. If I can't find one by the time my unemployment wears out I'll have to take out a huge loan.

And even then I wouldn't be able to spend squat on anything except food. Which sucks.

I worked super hard in college, got good grades, worked on a minor, did the whole honors thing.

I found out several months after getting hired at my current job that I had missed one of the classes required for my minor, and thus, didn't actually get my degree (even though I had walked during the graduation ceremony). In short, my job had never even looked to see if I had actually graduated college or even attended it to begin with.

Definitely consider internships. Going unpaid sucks at the time, but a decent internship is typically worth more than a college degree to the higher-paying employers.

Internships seem like such utter bull**** that was only created by greedy assholes to get people to work for them for free to be able to put more money in their own pockets.

Apprenticeships are where its at biatches.

I agree to a point, but also consider that in college proper, you're PAYING for what will likely be a less-relevant experience, at least as far as "real world" work as concerned.

Their utility varies from industry to industry, but generally speaking, they overcome many graduates' weakest points, namely experience in the field and industry contacts. Most Human Resources professionals will tell you that about 70% of jobs are filled before a vacancy is ever announced.

If your resume is experience-light and you've got no contacts, you're not getting hired in this market. There are too many people that have done the job you're applying for that are up against you. Of course, if it's a paid internship, so much the better, but don't shoot yourself in the foot right out of the gate.

I had a paid internship at a newspaper, actually. That's how I got to interview Uwe Boll.

The thing is, those kind of internships are rare as hell. That's why everyone came down to Jersey City from Boston after graduating - because there AREN'T ANY paid internships up here.

Not that I even want something like that. I already have an internship researching blogs that starts up at the end of the month. I just want at least one ****ty food job to supplement the time spent auditioning for student films and local theatre gigs.

There are no internships or apprenticeships for acting. You're professional or you're not. I understand that. It's just confusing as **** when you're busy as hell in school, turning down roles left and right, and then all of a sudden you graduate and there's nothing to do.

I worked really hard in school. Not only can I not put schoolwork on a resume, I actually LOST money for doing it.

Man, what a silly idea that was!

I somehow suckered someone into giving me a full ride to college and then spent my time working part-time jobs and doing extracurriculars and volunteer work. Did it kill my social life? I suppose. But I probably would have spent that time in my room playing video games anyways. Now I'm going into the Peace Corps for two years and if I can't get into their Fellows program to pay for grad school after this then I'll have to get into a school where they'll give me a stipend.

I made really good grades every semester getting my associate's degree. All A's and B's. Got A's in all but one of my programming classes. Funny story with that acutally, I would've gotten an A but I misunderstood the instructor and thought the due date for one of our exam programs was the date he was putting the instructions online. And he doesn't take late exams under any circumstances, so I got a zero. I needed to get a 100 on the final to get a B. Even a 99 would've only gotten me a C+. You better believe I got that damn B though.

Anyway, I'm currently doing oil changes at a Wal-Mart. So, yeah. Education (regarless of grades) without contacts and experience amounts to bupkiss.

I'm in need of some extra cash this semester, and I sure wish that I were black.

Because as it stands, I'm not eligible for any damn scholarships.
