Who uses Twitter?

Serious question.

I don't use it, and I don't ever plan to use it. However, it seems to be blowing up in my face everytime I surf the blogs on the net? Is it really...necessary?

I got an internship for the summer researching blogs.

In the interview, the guy liked the cut of my jib, and he told me right there that I was in.

On the condition that I join Twitter.

He was telling me that Twitter is the future.

I have yet to figure it out.

I use Twitter. As far as being necessary, it just depends on if you find it useful or not. I like to get updates on certain things but I also have it set up through my website too. It's not the most amazing website in the world and you could easily do without it. It just depends on the person.

Eh, I don't use it but then I don't begrudge it. There are practical uses for it. Like the NFL Draft twitter would have been this weekend. Mind you I said practical not necesarrily important. And there are also twitter whores who just like facebook whores want as many friends or suscribers as they can get to listen to whatever innane content they think of.

Honestly I've never gone to any twitter page so I don't know exactly how it works.

You post updates on what you're up to in 140 characters or less. You subscribe to others and see their updates on your page, and people can subscribe to you and see your updates. You can also direct some of your updates toward certain people. That's pretty much it.

It's usefulness comes if there are updates you want to see. The NFL update IRC mentioned would be nice for Football fans. News feeds might be good for those that want it. If your family members use it and you're too lazy to call them and ask them what they are up to, then there is significance there as well.

No, there's a large variety of ways to use it.
Ive got an account, but it's mainly so I can follow a few people's posts.

I'm still not entirely sure what the hell twittering is. Nor do I care. I don't even IM anymore so it is a non-issue.

Celebrities "tweeting" is kinda cool I guess, but I don't see why it's any better than a traditional blog.

I don't see the point in having a Twitter account after Facebook changed their homepage to pretty much act just like it. So it's unnecessary.

Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace all have "status update" of a sort now, that you can update from your ****ing phone.

It's just to let people know what you're up to on the fly. If you told some people you were gonna be at a certain place, like a large number of people, and something came up and you didn't wanna have to call everyone, just update your twitter while you're at the doctor's office or whatever. Yeah, it's largely unnecessary, but who cares?

Also, my new favorite webcomic has Twitters for all its main characters, and I like reading fictional twitters? I'unno. I'm weird. Live and let live, I say.

I have one, Altoecko is the name. I use it to follow announcements from companies and developers I enjoy. Also to see the mugshots from certain police departments that tweet mugshots and the crime committed of people they've recently incarcerated. It's also an easy way to sort through news headlines from certain news sources. Not as easy as Newser, but Newser doesn't report on everything.
