    Dub Or Sub? The Sequel

    Original topic: http://www.pavilionboards.com/forum/...=anime+dubbing

I'm pretty sure you all have your preferences for how you want to watch your anime. However, I'd like to know which is your favorite/least anime either in the subbed or dubbed forms.

    Bonanza's favorites:

    Subbed:
    Elfen Lied
    Full Metal Panic Fumoffu
    Get Backers

    Dubbed
    Ninja Scroll
    Golden Boy
    Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Universe
    Yu Yu Hakusho

    Bonanza's worst:

    Subbed
    Bakuretsu Tenshi

    Dubbed
    Naruto
    One Piece

Rarely, if ever, do I watch anime (and any foreign film, actually) dubbed if given a choice, so I really can't tell which ones are good and which ones are bad. I do seem to remember Perfect Blue being decent (I first owned it on VHS, in a dubbed version), and I know Excel Saga is agony-inducing in its dubbed version....nearly unwatchable.

I do find it funny sometimes when you are watching a dubbed anime, but leave the subtitles on, the translations are quite frequently different, and sometimes not just by a few words. Sometimes, an entirely new context is gained by comparing the two different translations. I duno. I just find it amusing.

It makes you wonder which translation is the most accurate when you read the subtitles and hear totally different dialogue.

Usually the subtitles are the literal translation before it gets localized and optimized for the dub.

But Cowboy Bebop's dub is extraordinary.

I've usually found that with side-by-side comparisons, the dubs have been Americanized more than the subs, so that a lot of things pop up in the subs that won't make sense without some kind of explanation.

It was really bad in GTO. The cultural references were almost always switched up from the sub to the dub.

Edit: WHAT MORA BEAT ME TO SAYING.

Oh god, the dubbed versions of Cromartie High are hilarious. The shows pretty funny/weird to begin with though.

street fighter II animated movie. the original vega(balrog) fight is pretty boring, but the americans made it awesome, somehow.

ninja scroll is a great dub too

                  otherwise, subbed all the way

Somthing that bothers me about subs.

OH that trumpet playing was Tres Bien!

                      *Tres Bien means Very Good

Why didn't they just put "Very good" in the line to begin with?

It could have to do with attempting to match syllables, versus words.

This. I am annoyed by 99.9999% of dubs.

Since I'm no longer illiterate, and I'm not that lazy, I don't really mind reading subtitles.

I'd understand that with a dub but a sub is just reading a translation.

In that case, I'd have to say "artistic license".
