Re: Do you believe in an Afterlife?

Technically humans are animals... but anyways I believe that every creature
uses intelligence and acts/reacts within their own boundaries. I do not feel it is fair to compare certain species because of the sheer fact that the world is completely different from the two's standpoints.

Oh and Ryner I actually do have some history in Philosophy. I try to surround myself with those kind of people...(philosophy professors)

Technically, we are animals. Furthermore, if we have boundaries, then that would be a fact of life.
And facts are truths, aren't they lil das?

And is it not possible that boundaries only exist because we think they do?

Can you please explain how this is some kind of argumentative standpoint against my prior comment...

Just because somebody uses the word "fact" does not mean that in the bigger picture it is a truth.

the world is round - fact of life

the sky is blue - fact of life

Boundary is simply a word expressing things one may or may not be able to do. I cannot say for certain what those things are and nobody can but different creatures have differentiating values that set them apart from others... I do not see that as a fact of life.

Again you are not thinking broad enough and (as I just said) it all depends on how we interpret things.
We categorize everything just because we always try to find the easy way out or the quickest solution. Mankind in general has a really simplistic standpoint on things.

Well, some think the world is flat, and others round. Neither party is right/wrong. But facts are not set in stone though.

Re: Do you believe in an Afterlife?

Yes, I believe in an "afterlife." According to my beliefs, heaven is being with God. That probably sounds boring to most of you, but to me, God is intriguing and wonderful. Hell, on the other hand, is the absence of God. To me, that means no hope, no love, no joy. As for the other details, I trust God. I'll let Him surprise me.

As I also believe that God created and loves humanity, I cannot imagine that He would be so exclusive as to condemn people to hell just because they did not believe certain things. Living one's life according to a code of honor and love for others, regardless of religion, is more important. Of course, all of that is up to Him and I can only speak for my own actions. Yet, I also believe that following Christ is the surest way of being as close to God as possible in this life and the next. Dare I mention free will?

As a footnote, the idea that "All things come to an end" may seem perfectly logical, but death always gives way to life in this world. Trees destroyed by fire, for example, release seeds that become new trees. The old, dead trunks harbor life of many kinds. Time is finite, but I prefer to believe that life exists beyond time.

That's better. That's what's important. But Dante would disagree.

I really don't like to think about death, but I would like to say that when I die, I will at least be at peace by then, and live a dignified existence.

                        So, I win.

Truth cannot change fore if it did then it would contradict itself. This is a major standpoint for the ideal of afterlife. In the quest for truth the world has none... so where is it at. The afterlife...

The answer is simply NO. Truth cannot become something else because then it would no longer be truth.
The afterlife was originally brought on by ancient philosophers (most notably Plato) as an explanation to where we will find truth. (the essence of things)
The idea is that when we die we go into an afterlife where we will be able to see the truth. (see Socrates' cave theory)

I am just pointing out your contradictions. If the truth only existed in the after life according to you, then how can it also exist in life, like you also pointed out. You say there is no truth, and at the same time you claim there are many truths. Huh? Anyway, I am not saying your opinions (although they were someone else's to begin with) are wrong. They are just contradictory.

Oh and as far as my not seeing things in a broader picture, if you read my posts in this thread, you would see that I am only seeing things in the broader picture. I don't think my saying things like "Do we die only because we think that's the natural order of things?", is a close minded statement. It cannot get any broader than this. Not in my opinion anyway.

lil_das said that "Truth cannot become something else because then it would no longer be truth." well let me bring up something for you to think about.

Lets say I have a small cylinder shaped piece of soap. The fact that it's cylinder shaped is a truth of this piece of soap. Now lets say I take a knife and cut off the round edges of this piece of soap so the soap becomes box shaped. Now the soaps truth has become something else, at first it's truth was that it was cylinder shaped and now it's truth is that it's box shaped. Truth can become something else, this is a new truth about the piece of soap and the old one no longer remains unless you were to change the truth about the soap again.

And that could sound a little funny cause I used soap as an example but oh well, it's one of the first things I thought of.
