    Sociology in your society.

I live in Indiana. Indiana sucks. I'd like to know what life is like where you guys live, so I could maybe find some personally experienced locale knowledge.

I wanted to live in Canada badly until I heard about the whole lack of religious freedom..

So....what's society like where you live?

    Lack of religious freedom? Buh?

If by that you mean that there are churches and raging christians everywhere, then yes, we do lack religious freedom.

I don't believe you used the right term, since sociology is the study of the functions and institutions of a society, but I'll explain how things are like in my area.

Overland, Missouri, where a bunch of lower middle class homes and an almost ghetto area sort of mix, with the rich suburbs of Olivette and St. Charles mere miles away. Overland is part of St. Louis.

Since I've moved here in 2001, I've seen, experienced, or heard, or read of:

      -Gunshots on four seperate occassions
-A drunk cop crash into one of my step mom's parked trucks
-A street racer crash into some neighbor's house
-A drunk cop crashing into someone's house
-Two cops peddling cocaine, getting caught, and they got to keep their job and were moved to another district
-My Ford Contour being broken into in which someone stole the radio and busted the window and tore the dashboard up
-Two murders have taken place in this city in the past 2 weeks

Of course, I could go on. I'm sure worse things have happened where others on these boards live.

Honestly, I'd like me a nice cozy shack in Montana, where there's no one for miles around and I'm free to do whatever the hell I please. I can't stand being around cameras, cops, cell phones, kids, traffic, and large amounts of people.

If by that you mean that there are churches and raging christians everywhere, then yes, we do lack religious freedom.
I figured America would be far worse, considering those same sorts of people are a major force in our oversized government right now.

Life is fine in Portland. There are a couple assholes, but you can ignore 'em.

        Yep.

New York City. Aliens, monsters and terrorists are constantly attacking us but we'd never know it because we're secretly saved by government agents and clandestine societies and the occasional superhero. The weather and a meteor also decimated us a few times. Whatev.

And back home in New Jersey we're overrun by animated sentient fast food beings and giant cartoon robots. A crackhead and his fat trenchcoat-clad friend hang out everywhere. There's also a grand supply of quirky people who, deep down inside, are warm-hearted and special.

I've had quite a few Christian friends in Canada, and one was once arrested for having a bible in public. I think he lived in Western Canada.

Aliens and monsters and terrorists oh my! Love the witty Jay and Silent Bob reference.

I suppose I should explain what life is like in Central Indiana.

                Firstly, my peers.

School? Cliques. I don't really have to say much on the subject. Just that you'll see gatherings of certainly clothed people in perfect semi-circles facing away from eachother.

There's only the occasional person who walks between the groups, me being one of them.

                Secondly, overage of bull**** Christianity.

I don't mean a lot of people are Christian. I mean a lot of people are close-minded and Christian. The Indiana government is the same way. And you can tell these people shove their beliefs down their children's throats. I've had quite a few debates dealing with fascism with my peers, and they never have viable points, unless you consider "EWW THEY LIKE DICK" and "TOWELHEADS TOWELHEADS" and "THEY TOOK ER JOBS" viable references.

                Thirdly, it's flat.

Physically, it's boring. It lacks any height differentiation whatsoever.

I will admit that there's one great thing about most of Indiana. It has the perfect amount of solitude for me. You're near neighbors, but your house isn't shoved against theirs. You live in mildly spread out communities that aren't too far from the larger cities.

Oh, and those teenagers who decide that they won't be Christians are just blind rebels. I'm not trying to make any point, just stating my analyses, but the only intelligent AND open-minded peers I know are the Agnostics, in general.

Everyone else is either goody-goody-blind-Christian or baddy-baddy-blind-Satanist-who-thinks-it's-cool-to-cut-himself-in-public-and-then-laugh-about-it.

EDIT: My bad, sorry about double post.

Our town is awesome. No aliens, terrorists, creatures and no crime.
The worst crime which was ever reported in the past few decades was an armed robbery with a fishing rod without a hook. Before that is was shoplifting..
(There was only 1 murder here and that was because some guy didn't want to go to Vietnam back in those days I think... So he killed someone and was sent to prison. Saddest thing ever.)

The best thing about this town (and the majority of other cities and towns in Germany in general)?

NO GODLY CHRISTIANS. (if there are any, they're outcast and are being made fun of for being 'immature'.. seriously.)

Wannabe street racers and white thugs abound in the high schools. More than half my graduating class couldn't speak, spell, or write higher than a 4th grade level. Oklahoma is a bible-belt state, ground to a ****ing pulp with religious insanity. Hugely diverse culture in Oklahoma City, though. Lots and lots of asians make their home in this state, probably because of the low cost of living. Same for the Mexicans. I never noticed any gangs or anything, but I stay away from the 'bad' areas of the city. You'll instantly know you've crossed into a bad neighborhood because of the run-down-ness of it. Cell phones are the most popular thing in the world, and I hate them. Hate hate hate them.

I have no idea where I'm going here.

Oh yeah, it's a great place to retire because it's cheaper than a lot of other states.

Apparently southeastern OK is all hills and cliffs and rivers and hillbillies. I don't go there, though.

Soy de Austin, the liberal capital of Tex-ass, which isn't saying much. We do have a little bit of everything here, it seems... you can see hippies and legislators in suits walking down the sidewalk in front of the capital.

I'm from SA, where white people are the minority, which is fine with me. I wish I could speak more spanish, but I get by.

This town is full of UT students, most of whom I despise because of their poor driving/social skills. They also have this uncanny ability to honk their horns like chimps after every sports event.

The town thinks it's a lot better than it actually is when it comes to live music and art. We try.

If I couldn't live here, I wouldn't live in Tex-ass. Every other town sucks.

Portland, Michigan. Population 4,000+. Small midwest town. Mostly white. Mostly middle class. Majority Catholic. Don't fart or you'll be labeled a sinner. We have a cool bridge.
