    a little battle help please

All right, my friends. I have been searching for the last 3 hours, trying to figure this out and it is driving me INSANE. I have found several threads that ALMOST explain what I am looking for but nothing that quite helped. I feel like there is just one tiny piece of the puzzle that I am missing for one reason or another and it is all I need left to figure this out.

All right, so I am new to this forum and to the game and I have been trying to figure out how to do a Character Battle for the last however many hours. I got that I build the character and I set up the event thing, but I seem to be missing something and I am lost now. What I am trying to do at this point is just have my main playable character walk up to a npc (maybe trigger a message, like the ones triggered when you find a treasure or object, but not a storyteller) and then they go into a battle straight from there. I am not worrying about the storytelling right now because I am trying to figure this out first. Seems simple enough... but I can't get it to work.

So, I have made the character I wish to battle. Then I went into Event Code and selected the NPC at the character in Battle, selected a battle setting (though I couldn't select a place that I created, just preset ones), selected that I did not want the game to end after battle and selected music to play. Now, whenever I go to the Layout and try to set up an event, the NPC does not show up like if I were trying to place a villager or something, so I don't know what to do next. I have gone through 4 pages of search threads and can't figure out what I am supposed to do next. I mean, it is simple enough but I don't know what to do. What am I missing?

If someone would please help me out, I would greatly appriciate it. Thank you all for your patience.

If the character is in "Characters" you should be able to go into the layout and go to "New"->"Character"->character, he should be there, if not you have already placed him somewhere else already.

The problem with RPGM3 is that you can only place a character in ONE place, once you do you cannot use him again and he is stuck there for all eternity, if you want him to be in a different place you'll have to make a duplicate copy of him in "Characters" and use the duplicate copy as the fighter.

Thats all I could think of as to why the character isnt there, hope it helps, and welcome to the Pav!

OMG... I am such an idiot. Based on your advise, I went back to recheck my game and found out that the whole time I was trying to set the boss up in the field... THE FIELD. Ugh! I knew that I can't put characters there, I don't even know what I was thinking. So, the problem was that I hadn't tried putting him anywhere else but the field and of course it wouldn't work there! D: I feel like a fool. Haha. Anyhow, thank you SO much for your help. I appriciate it a lot.

I also have another quick question, more so of curiosity than great importance, but in the storyteller screen how long does each key represent. Is it a frame or a second or niether? I notice when I put something on for 10-15 keys it does really last that long. Or at least this is the case with my Game Over screen... but maybe that is a different situation?

Not an idiot, just uninformed, you cant be expected to learn the game completely within an hour

Every key with something in it will not go to the next until you press a button, after the button is pressed every empty key between that one and the next occupied key I believe is about 1 second

Welcome Eve. You'll like it here.

            Regarding the storyteller.

From 00 to 05 on the left hand side takes about 1 second or so.
So, that's about 6 frames per second, I guess. You can test it out with a stopwatch. (That, of course, is without using any messages, which require button pushes. If you create a message key, then everything in the next line waits to happen until the button is pushed.).

On the top of the screen you see:

BG A B C Effect OBJ Msg SE BGM

As long as you don't use text messages (under Msg), you can basically create a movie using background graphics, background sounds, character graphics, etc. Now, if you want them to say things, then the length of time depends on when the player pushes the button.

Oh, Eva, lemme know if there's anything else you had to search for that should go in my Answers to Basic Questions thread. I've been really neglecting it lately.

I will definately! Your Thread was the one I went to first. If I think of anything else that fits in your thread I will definately send it your way!

Page: Thank you so much for that! It was very helpful. I am still not sure how to use the story teller to it's fullest animation capabilities, but I figured the basics and message stuff. Also still trying to figure out how to compile a map with all the fields, towns, dungeons, etc I created... That or how to make them all flow together. But I am sure I will catch it with a bit more prodding and a little forum searching. ^_^

lol, thank you everyone for bein so helpful (and patient too!). ^_^

                    Actually I think it's 1 frame, which is 1/30th of a second.

I dunno, I haven't touched the software in a while though.

I dunno, it seemed faster than that for me. I think leaving 12 keys empty left enough time for the screen fade-out/fade-in commands to complete. Those last about a second or two.
