Hard Drive...something. It speeds up loading times a bit.

If you have the PS2 hard drive, you can install RPG Maker 3 to it, and that chops about a second or so off the load times. the RPG Maker Magazine did tests, and the results were barely noticable.

It seems you can only use it if you have the first (bulky) style of PS2, it does not work with the slimline PS2

And it's definately not worth getting just for load time differences. Unless you intend to play Final Fantasy XI - Online, it's nothing but a glorified memory card.

a 40GB glorified memory card...its like having 5,000 PS2 memory cards in 1, but some games only allow 1 save per memory card...so its kinda at a loss with those games, it would have been a lot better if they allowed you to partition the HDD

Most games can't directly save to the HDD, though. Including RPGM3. You have to copy saves from your memory card to the HDD using the PS2's interface.
