    RPG Maker 1 - Playstation 3 Incompatability - Read!

The Playstation 3 uses "virtual memory cards" for PS1 and 2 games. It only allows 2 virtual memory cards to be loaded on the system at a time. This means that any RPGM1 game that uses more than two memory cards will be UNPLAYABLE on the Playstation 3, since you cannot swap memory cards during play, like is need for games that often have one system card, 1 scenario card (or more) and a dedicated art card.

Just wanted to get this info out there before people go trading their PS2s in for PS3s.

Can you load a different virtual memory card onto the system without shutting the current game down?

Everything I've read says that you pick what virtual memory cards are loaded into the slots at the system's main menu. So you would have to exit the game in order to load different cards.

Damn it! Now I loathe the PS3 even more than I already did.

You can't really blame them though. no other PS1 or 2 game has ever used more than one memory card at a time, much less 3 or 4 like RPGM1. Why would sony ever think to allow people to load more than two virtual memory cards at a time?

you can have as many virtual memory cards saved on the machine as you want, but only two can be used at a time. I actually think the virtual memory card thing is really cool. lets you have every single RPGM2 and 3 game on your system at once.

I s'pose. Though, it means I'll need to keep my PS2 around. That is, if I get a PS3 and a Dex Drive.

Will we at least be able to swap RPGM1 saves over the internet without a Dex Drive? Mine conked out sometime in the past 3-4 years and my new computer doesn't even have the right plug in the back. To be honest, I have no idea what version of Omegablade Saga is on the site, because I uploaded it from my old computer without being able to see which version it was. If anyone has played it I'd like to know if the information I put on the page is accurate (You should know within the first 5 minutes, since you just have to walk outside the house you start in and explore the east end of town to find the herb garden. If there's no garden, then it's the old version).

It really sucks that we won't be able to play games that require more than 2 cards at a time. How many games currently on the Pavilion do you think will be affected?

Eventually, you'll be able to download every RPGM1, 2, and 3 game (except games that use more than two cards) from the pavilion directly to the Playstation 3.

The PS3 internet browser does not allow you to download things directly to the system's hard drive. downloads must go on a removable storage device (like a memory stick) where they can then be transferred to the system's hard drive.

However, .gme and .max files won't work on the PS3. So we are going to have secondary downloads of the games in the virtual memory card format, so they're ready for the PS3 as entire memory cards.

If you make a game on a PS3, you can still use the submission system (which will be changed to allow larger uploads and the new file extensions) to upload your game directly to the pavilion. I tested this a while ago with the PSP. I was able to select a .max file from the PSP's browser (I put it in the photo folder) and upload it to the pavilion just fine. The PS3 uses the same operating system as the PSP, so there should be no problems there.

I am sooooo confused. What RPGM1 games use more than 3 memory sticks?!

                      Secret of Everyone, for one.

Anormia, if I'd ever finished the original version. The last demo I did of it took up 5 (including all the sprite art sniffy did.)

                      there have to be others.

we'll have you dead pretty soon...

and thus the most incompatable RPGM1 game.

Any lengthy RPG on the site uses 3 cards, just about. And more of them use exactly three, which is also a problem, especially if any use three cards at the same time (like my own game).
