What's with Reputation?

Personally, I think it's kind of a dumb thing.

What does it even do? What is it for?

Anyone can just say, "Oh, I didn't/did like what you had to say, I think I'll punish/praise you for having an opinion"? Isn't that what forums in general are for? Expressing opinions?

True, but seriously, I'm curious as to the purpose of this. Does having a negative rep prevent you from doing stuff? High rep enable you to do stuff?

It's just a measure of how big of a loser you are, but I'm not quite sure which end of the scale is which.
