    wich one

heyo peeps, i know i'm just a newby here, but I need to know wich RPG MAKER to get, the 3 looks the best but everyone says it sucks balls and the characters are bad and that you can't customize anything.
Then there is the RPG MAKER 2, when I read about it it sounded like it was packed with capability and customization, then I looked everywhere for a picture or something until I found some weird Japanese video, wich, the graphics sucked on.

so, my question, is either one worth buying a new playstation two and selling a gamecube?
And is it anything like RPG maker 2003 or XP, cause besides the graphics, those are excellent with customization, you could make anything you ever wanted on that game, and after a little bit of playing around, it's easy to get use to.

Ok, one more thing, getting of the subject a little, why don't they make the rpg maker games for the computer, i thought they started on the computer anyways, i mean, why not make it for a computer since alot more people have computers then playstation 2's , and it would allow to import music and your own characters and other things, allowing for the ultimate customization.

and please, don't kill me for what i just said...

I'll ignore that you spelled "which" wrong, and I'll help you out, even though you said terrible things about RPGM2.

Anyways here are some things I have done with it.

Here is a link to some videos of my RPGM2 movie.

And a screenshot of another RPGM2 project of mine.

So I'd have to say RPGM2 for console RPG Makers, you don't get anymore customization than that. Plus I think you are able to make beautiful graphics with that thing.

Yup, you're new alright. At risk of making a long post only to have somebody beat me to the punch, I have some things that need to be said.

First, RPG Maker started out on the SNES. Second... Actually, that "don't kill me" part makes me wonder if you know the rest, so I'll just skip that for now.

Anyway, you pretty much already know the details. RPGM2 is powerful but has cartoony graphics (and a motion blur that takes a little getting used to) and takes some getting used to. RPGM3 has more realistic graphics but very lacking in capabilities (you can't even make people walk) and lacks variety. Need more info to make a decision? What sort of things do you want to happen in your game? We can help you find out which one would do what you want.

well, jeez, sorry I suck at spelling but this isn't english class.

Anyways, your game looks great, and by the way everything moves and the camera angles and stuff, I can tell RPG MAKER 2 is the most customizable(did i spell that right?), but It's graphics really just don't impress me, sorry, but thanks for your help and time, i'm sure you hate me now.

One more question pleaze, can RPG MAKER 3 really do anything?

woops, i missed "draygone's" post, well, basicly, I love RPG MAKER 2003's capability, after getting to know the program you can basicly do anything, so what I was more wondering, was if on rpg maker 3 can you do anything close to what RPG MAKER 2003 or XP could do...

Ascii's first RPG Maker was made for a computer. the console RPG Maker series started out on the SNES.

why don't they make the rpg maker games for the computer
XP came out for the PC just a few years ago in japan. There are going to be more PC RPG Makers on the way, but for now XP is their main title.

Oh really? When was the first PC RPGM released? Or for that matter, the first console one, actually.

ASCII's first RPG Maker title in-name was RPG Construction Tool Dante, which was released in 1988 for the MSX 2 computer.

The first console RPG Maker was RPG Tsukūru Super Dante, released in 1995 for the Super Famicom.

fahuggah, I know nothing about RPGM3 to compare with RPGM XP. You seem to know some characteristics about RPGM 2003 and correct me if I'm wrong but you seem to be focused more on customization and possibilities for imports (musics, graphics) than 3D graphics.

As for me, I'm totally sold to XP version. True it's 2D graphics, not 3D graphics like RPGM2 or 3, but the game resolution is 640 X 480 pixels which is fairly good. That makes tiles of 32x32 to design. As for progamming possibilities, you have the usual event and common event programming with built-in commands. But you can also mess with RUBY scripts (RGSS), similar to C language. With RGSS, you can literaly modify the core of the RPG game: design menu windows the way you want, change the battle system, create new commands or routines. With good programming skills, you could even use that to create an action side scrolling game if you'd want to. And you have no limits in memory for all the materials you use (music files, images...). I've heard that a little downside is that some few useful event commands from its computer predecessors have been removed in XP. However, most of these have been redone with RGSS and are available on the web.

I'd recommend that you download the 30-days trial version and experiment with it to see if you like it. And if you can rent RPGM3 to test and compare it that could help too.

                  Re: wich one

RPGM2 is the absolute best in terms of customizability. The vfx editor blows everything away. However, the character models look like garbage for the most part. It does have a steep learning curve, but if your project calls for visual effects and a custom battle system there is no better choice.

RPGM3 is the easiest and fastest way to make a decent RPG, but it falls short on visual effects and quite a few other aspects which up until now we took for granted. There's, for instance, a limit on the number of people your game can have, and they can't have their graphics changed, though their names can be changed. RPGM3 also has variables, but unless if you know how to, you can't do any math functions with them. Towns and building interiors can't be modified, except with decorations and events. Characters can only have 16 special abilities, and if you want more than one to have the same albility, you have to recreate the ability for each character. Not being able to change the camera angle from 3rd person or force characters to walk does suck, but that's why they made storytellers.

In spite of its limitations, though, I'd have to say I'm a fan of RPGM3. Most of the people who hate RPGM3 couldn't make the story they wanted to do the way they wanted it done. RPGM3 can be used to tell almost any story within the medievil fantasy genre. You can't necessarily make Final Fantasy XIII with it, but you can still make a good game and tell a good story.

Yeah we talk all the time about how much we hate RPGM3 but we keep playing it....

But if you do get RPGM2 be ready for a world of confusion at first...

If you get RPGM2, here's a few hints to get started:

Start your first project on Easy mode, then immediately switch to Hard. It gives you all the sample items, maps, and other stuff, and also unlocks advanced options.

If you want to make your own items, copy a sample item of the same type and modify it, because otherwise you'll throw your controller across the room the first time you playtest it. Those controllers are expensive!
