What should the subject of my speech be?

Guys, I'm taking a speech and communication class, which is a general requirement, and mandatory. It is rather harsh. My last two speeches have been mediocre, so this next one has to be good. It's not enough just to pass this class - for reasons I won't go into now, I need to get my GPA up by the end of the semester.

This next speech is an informative-persuasive speech, roughly ten minutes. That means I have to spend the first half informing the audience about the issue/subject/matter at hand, and the second half persuading them to take a stand on the issue.

Thing is, I got nothing. I don't know what to talk about, because I'm constantly second-guessing myself.

My first idea was to give a speech about homelessness in Boston, which is a problem, but the only thing I can persuade people to do is to complain to someone in charge, and that is not enough to go on.

I was gonna give a speech on the history of the Watchmen film adaptation and how it can be a reality, but then I did some preliminary research and found out that it IS going to be a reality, so pretending I have any hand in it is useless.

Now, I'm not asking anyone to do my work for me. I could just use an idea; some inspiration. Just throw me a bone. I mean, what do YOU care about? What is worth talking about? What wrongs need to be righted?

    Thanks for your time, fellas.

I took a speech class last semester. I did my persuasive speech on why people shouldn't bother voting.

Do a speech on why people shouldn't bother going to college.

What about a speech on why you should be given an A+ on this speech?

Why not make up an issue? demand equal voting rights for toucans. with the elections coming up, their votes could really make a difference.

Make a speech about why your speech is worthless.

Ah speech class. I took interpersonal speech for my required credit, so much cooler, and I got to take it with Jesse Jackson.

Unless you can make a really good arguement, I'd stay away from silly topics.

I remember in high school me and two friends all did informative speeches on football, one of us did offense, the other defense and the third special teams. It was super lame because for some reason there were only five people in the class.

I have the same assignment due next Wednesday. I'm doing mine on the issue that minors don't need parental notification to recieve an abortion in California (I'm not sure about other states). My professor said it would be a good topic.

A lot of people shy away from firebrand topics, but as long as you put together a decent argument, it's usually better than the tamer stuff.

                    Affirmative Action, whom it helps/hurts.
Women in the Military, a little dated but still could be heated.
Immigration figures to be in the news prominently, especially when the wall starts going up.
Anything incendiary is at least guaranteed to have your audience paying attention, even if it's only because they're waiting for the chance to yell at you.
If you're looking for a crusade or a strong stance on an issue, I'd start writing about what's irritating me most at the moment. Your speech is bound to be more intense, if you actually care about it.

PS: The random thought in your profile was great.
So you're a fish out of water...

                    What else can you do?

That's actually pretty great. May I ask how it was accepted.

I'm seriously considering this. I think there was a Dateline special on the rising prices in tuition, and how it's essentially BS. However, my teacher might point out the contradiction in giving such a speech to college students.

As much as I'd love to, my teacher has already discouraged this. He told us about a student who tried to pitch a movie to Ghandi, or something. He failed the assignment.

And thanks for addressing actual issues, Shard. I didn't expect that. The hard part about that, though, is I don't care about anything like that. If worse comes to worse, I might have to just buckle down with an issue and pretend that I DO care about it.

... Is net neutrality still a big deal?

I once made a speech about why I should never make a speech... The best grade I ever got in my speech class was for that.

You should counter with saying that college students are the ones who would benefit most from your speech.

I'm an excellent public speaker. I can give you some tips if you let me know what you didn't do so good on in your previous speeches.
