I was discussing this with a friend of mine and thought it might make an interesting topic so here I go.
To start with, my real name is, believe it or not, Charlie Brown. Well, Charles Brown, but you get the picture. So I have this shirt, it says Charlie's Angels and has a big picture of Charles Manson above the three women he had murder people for him. Now, my fascination with madness and the fact that my name also happens to be Charlie has drawn me to wear this shirt regularily (not to mention I find his music enjoyable).
A friend of mine, who owns a Che Geuvara shirt (though was not wearing it when we talked), asked me "Why exactly do you wear a shirt with a serial killer on it? Isn't Charles Manson supposed to be despised and hated and whatever?"
So I replied "What makes Che Guevara any better?"
And he goes "What?"
So I explained "Che Guevara isn't any better than Charles Manson." He looked confused. "In fact, if we're talking pure body, count Che Guevara is WORSE than Charles Manson."
At this point my friend interjects several times about standards in society and what not, all issues I've wrestled with myself, but missing the point of the conversation entirely.
So I go "Look. Romantic idealism aside, Che Guevara plain killed more people than Charles Manson ever did. Che Guevara killed... no... EXECUTED more people PERSONALLY than Charles Manson had his gang of crazy's kill ALL TOGETHER. Both of them used romantic ideals to persuade others to kill for them and both killed people themselves and both intended to make a better world through their actions, no matter how twisted you may think either of their vision may be. So, Che Guevara's body count is higher, so he must be worse, so how can you accuse me of wearing a shirt with a murderer on it when you have one with an even worse murderer in your wardrobe?"
That's where our conversation stopped because he couldn't think of an awnser to that, but I'm interested in what other people think on the subject. So what do YOU think?
Charles Manson or Che Guevara?
Disclaimer: I have nothing against socialism and communist idea's, I'm merely trying to illustrate the commonalities of various figures who are "revered" or "despised" for whatever reasons and how they are still the same because they have killed and/or ordered people to kill for whatever reasons. It's not my intention to start a debate about political ideoligies.
