    I. Hate. My. Computer.

Recently, I opened a file that had a virus on it.

    My fault.

I shut down the computer (it seemed to shut down the monitor first, then I had to hit the power AGAIN to shut it completely off) (laptop; Dell Inspirion 600m). Now it refuses to start up again. It powers up, but doesn't start up...

I have no idea how to fix the problem and I don't want to spend $165+ to have those crapheads at Dell to fix it, where there chat support is just a simple computer program that says "I don't know what to do, call our support line and give us monies!". So I am at a loss. I can't reformat if I can't get the computer to simply start up, and I can't send it to the manufacturer if I don't want to spend more than I actually have.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Can you reboot with the start up disc?

*nevermind, I read the post closely*

Perhaps your hd has gone to *****. Samething happened to me. I ended up having to get a new computer.

See if it's actually salvageable before shelling out any money to try and fix it.

Most likely if I did hand it in they would say it was a mobo problem and make me shell out $5-600 for it to be fixed.

Dell is getting on my nerves.

You don't necessarily have to use Dell though. There's other technicians, though some may cost more or less.

Maybe, if I am extremly, undoubtly lucky, I could find one.

But Laptops are harder than PCs to find anyone that knows what they are doing.

            Double Post FTW...

I called Dell Tech support, but because my warrenty has expired, I have to be charged per diagnosis. I am betting around $64...

No. I am broke, I cannot do that. I get redirected 3 times. I have to give out my phone number and e-mail each time. It is just so dumb. So I hang up when the computer tells me "I WANTAS YOURZA MONIES! GIMMES YOUS MONIES NOWAS!!!"

            I hang up.

Dell: We care about you for a year, then charge you for everything after that.

Put the battery in the microwave and claim it exploded and broke your laptop.

Or you could always get a free laptop from Best Buy... but no, you wouldn't be interested in doing that...

Warrenty expired; and I don't steal.

                New update!

It seems my computer works! but the monitor is either broken, or is on constant Power Save (even when plugged in) I really think it is the latter. Anyone know how to turn powersave off? If you do PLEASE TELL ME!

That is what causing my computer to not look like it is working. Windows does open (thankfully my sound is on) and I can hear the opening tune.

Any help please? BESIDES DAMAGING MY COMPUTER MORE?!

Damn you, Dell, for charging me for labor and possibly replacing parts, because I'm an idiot and got a virus.

                  DAAAAMN YOU!!

Labor is not charging calls on the phone just to say. Sorry, we have no idea what's wrong and you can't beat our faces in because we live over here in India where they charge you 64 bucks a question and us 1 cent an hour.

Virus? Come on, we all know it was porn spyware and adware.

I don't know, I've never been charged for calling support. Maybe they hate you?

No, it's because my warrenty expired. They set a warrenty for a year and once that expired you get a line in India where they charge you per question, diagnosis and then the actual fixing of the computer. Seperately.

Like a mechanic of a car I guess. I would rather fix my own computer than get charged over and over again for somthing I can ask around and find out what to do for free. Like fixing your own car.

Oh, and anyone want's to know what I opened to make it do that. It was "PC Virus Scanner"... I hate Irony...

Apperently It Might Not Be The Virus At All
Somone else having this problem too.
I was having trouble before the virus. I thought it was just because my screen was set for "5 min shut off monitor mode" I turned it off and thought I solved the problem.

I think it is a loose connection in my computer. So BWAH! It's not my fault (sorta)! Now I got to find out how to take apart my computer without any tools...
