I went to the Gamespot After Hours event in San Francisco @ Pier 27 tonight, and got to see some awesome stuff.
First off, i got to play 3 PS3 games tonight, Full Auto 2 (PS3 exclusive), i got to play the single player mode, which was pretty cool, you can do a racing style game, or an actual death match style. I also got to try multiplayer, and it was awesome, some decent weapons, AWESOME graphics, and playing against another people was fluid, no lag or anything, and real players get vengeful when they are chasing you, but you drop a mine and blow them up.
I got to play Gundam too, again, it looked AWESOME, but the controls take ALOT of getting used to. The controls are somewhat complex, but allow you to do more complex things including actual sniping with a gundam mech and close quarters combat was still kinda clunky, but not too bad.
Ridge Racer 7 was fun, it looked beautiful, rivaling any racing game i have seen to date, and it was only running at 720p on the exact same TV i have at home, so i can only imagine what it looks like at 1080p. They have changed the mechanics of the game a bit, so that powersliding is still important, but you need to learn how to use slipstreaming to get ahead of your opponents. All in all a very good racer, but not much different from Ridge Racer on the PSP, except for graphics and the tracks were MUCH different, atleast the ones I played.
I have to say that i have heard some not so good impressions of the PS3 controller, and i have to say, i dont agree at all. The controller is light, MUCH lighter than the DS2(DualShock2), but it feels just as sturdy as the DS2. I LOVE the new "triggers" that it has, you feel like you have more control over them than just pressing the L2 and R2 buttons on the DS2. I didnt get to check the motion sensing portions of it, but none of the games there were compatible that i know of.
(Closed rooms with Developers) We also got to chat with the developers of Bioshock (Irrational Games), and it is coming to the 360 and PC, plus i got the scoop that we MAY see another Freedom Force game. Bioshock looked fantastic, there were a few minute things i didnt like (the bob of the weapon is so exaggerated as to be almost nauseating).
I got to see The Darkness in play, which seemed very cool, although its not high on my list.
Sid Meyers Railroads actually seems like it will be ALOT of fun, i recommend checking out the demo that will be available at the end of the month (even though the game is in stores Tuesday).
Jade Empire for the PC looks VERY VERY Nice. A serious graphical upgrade from the Xbox version, and it has a bunch of extra fighting styles, and quests, etc.
(Games i couldnt play) I got to see the new .hack game, and it looked very very cool, much better in every way than the original .hack series. I got to see the new Splinter Cell and DOAX2. Splinter cell honestly seemed exactly the same as the previous one, and while DOAX2 seemed to have alot to do, it was mostly about the T&A.
All in all, my feet are killing me, i've got a headache from all the music, flashing lights, and bad karaoke, but it was a great event, and i look forward to next year's event.
Unfortunately, Nintendo did not feel that it needed to showcase the Wii at this event.
