Sony announces PS3 price cut in japan. and more blatant copying.

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/6158155...stnews;title;1

The low-end model PS3 (20GB hard drive version) WILL have HDMI now, and only cost around $429.

This has not been announced for anywhere outside of japan yet. Hopefully this change will go into effect everywhere.

in other news, the PS3 now can use emulators for PC Engine, and the Genesis. HMMMM. WHERE DID WE SEE THAT BEFORE? Of course, sony will say that they've always intended to do this, and probably claim to have invented the idea themselves.

My God, Sony's trying to kick Nintendo behind the dumpster. If they decide to include more emulators, less of a need to get a Wii.

BTW, I heard their TGS keynote was nothing short of bad, with people using DS pictochat and/or leaving it.

Sounds like they're less concerned about Nintendo than they are about Microsoft. Kicking the price down to $429 won't do anything for those already planning on getting a Wii, but it makes the PS3 much more attractive than it might have been otherwise if you were torn between it and the 360, especially with HDMI support. The only reason I can guess at for taking a bigger loss on the console (and only in Japan) is to keep Microsoft's share of the Japanese marketplace miniscule.

If I had to guess, someone at Sony realized the blunders are starting to pile up and they need to do some damage control. I say this being a consumer of their last two consoles (and owning no other consoles of those generations of hardware).

So can we say that Sony has officially become a running gag, here?

When I posted about the emulators in the other Sony thread everybody was more interested in the $1 demos oddly enough. And I posted the price cut and HDMI in the Good news about PS3 thread but I guess you can't have too many Sony threads.

The higher-end PS3 will go for a set $599 stateside, but will carry an "open price" in Japan--meaning retailers can charge whatever price they like. Given that there will be only 100,000 units available on day one in the country, that price is likely to be quite high. Considering how retailers like to bundle to drive up prices at console launches with free reign to set their own price it's going to get painful.

Yeah, a game that is bascially an updated version of the first one. It doesn't even seem they added any new gameplay other than not having to go back to the savepoint to change characters.

Of course everyone forgets that Sony planned something similar with the PS2, but it never panned out.

                    Unless you're in Japan it's still $499.

Yeah, that is in the article above.

If you have the newest bestest HDTVs it's the connection you need to attack your eyeballs for massive damage. Although people debate if there's a noticeable difference from 1080i or w/e. If you have a lower end HDTV or a standard tv it's just 4 letters that mean nothing to you.

And likewise, people forget that Nintendo invented this system with the satellaview for the super famicom.

I can only guess at Nintendo's reaction to this news.

If Sony is going to offer PC Engine and Genesis games for download, they might as well include arcade games, too--like the XBox 360 does.
