    Give me car advice.

I have a Pontiac Grand Prix '04. I have 6,000 left to pay it off, and it's at about 21,000 miles right now. I'm going to be driving at least 40 minutes a day for 5 days a week when I move back. I was thinking of trading it in for something more gas efficient when I get it paid off, preferrably a GM car because I have like $3,000 earned through GM points on my credit card.

Do you guys recommend any gas efficient GM cars? Is it even worth doing? Discuss.

I'd keep the grand prix, those are nice cars.

21,000 miles is really good when you only have $6000 to go. I paid mine off at around 35,000.

I guess it depends on whether or not you find your gas costs acceptable.

        gas efficient GM cars
An oxymoron if I ever heard one. People even have trouble exceeding 25 mpg with the new Aveos, despite a much higher EPA rating...

Given the rate of depreciation of a car, I wouldn't even bother if your goal is to save money. Buying a new car would cost you so much money from the depreciation of the one you have that you would not recoup the extra money spent on gas savings, provided gas stays under $3/gallon or so(Once the car wears out, or it's time to get a new one, it would be wise to get something that gets 50+ mpg. Sorry, GM doesn't make a car like that.).

If you want a fuel efficient car, grab a used Geo Metro XFi, Honda CRX HF, or a Honda Civic VX, all which can return over 50 mpg combined and you could find in good condition for under $2,000.

You could improve upon the one you have, if you aren't bothered at the prospect of modifying its body to make it more aerodynamic, installing low rolling resistance tires, using synthetic transmission oil, installing a taller final drive ratio, among other possible modifications. For less than $2,000 of modifications, you could make this into a 30+ mpg(combined) car.

Gawd I hate cars especially fixing them... That's why I take the bus.

              Hi Dan Quayle.

Joking aside, do whatever you think is best for you. I rather just stick with the car that is almost paid off, but if the factor of gas milage is an issue to you, browse around. Are you only interested in newer, higher end cars?

My 87.5 Subaru XT Turbo got 24mpg before it choked on me. My mother's Ford Excursion got 8mpg on the other hand.
