    Dragon Quest 8 raped me...

    It seemed nice...I thought it wanted to be my friend...we were having a good time and everything, but, before I knew it, I was leveling up just for the sake of it, just so I could get farther. And then, before I knew it, my hands were behind my back, my pants were around my ankles, and I was at level 6 having already died twice. And then...the first boss killed me despite all my hours of work! *cries*

    I don't want to report it, I'm too ashamed and I just want it to be over with. I just don't want to see Dragon Quest 8 again. I kept hearing great things about it, but it just wastes your time leveling up and you wake up sore in the morning. I have to go now...

    Yeah, you have to level up a bit during that first area before taking on the waterfall boss

              The game forces you to level up and at the same time offers ways to avoid random battles.

              It's a conundrum of what Japanese call "fun".
              ...and that's why.

                It's what Dragon Quest is. If you don't like lots of leveling to progress play a different series.

                    But leveling up in Dragon Quest is fun.
                    The Cyclops having only one eye, needed to seek shelter from the harsh sun. The shadow cast by the spheres gave him temporary respite.

                      havent played a DQ game in a while, have ya Kire?

                      i have noticed, that i dont have to do as much specific leveling later into the game, even once you get 4 legged transportation.

                      But yeah, DQ games are a bit of a leveling grind, but still fun, IMO.

                        I never really found that leveling was required because I always end up over-leveled. I think the only time I did it in 8 was to get Angelo's HealUs before Douhlmagus.

                          I did level up a bit in the beginning. But then I also got caught up in a few side quests at the very beginning, so I leveled up a bunch before the first boss before I knew it.

                            Yeah, in DQ8 you do have to level up a bit, but at least it's not like you have to run in circles for hours. There's lots of land to explore. Later you don't have to do quite as much leveling to get by.

                              I have this game, but as of yet have not played it, nor the demo for FFXII that comes with it.
