Sony just stole Christmas! for Europe

European sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 delayed until March
    International Herald Tribune

Sony's upgrade video-game console PlayStation 3 will be delayed until March in Europe, but will go on sale in November as planned in the U.S. and Japan, the executive in charge of the project said Wednesday.

The sales delay is caused by a problem in mass producing a key component in the Blu-ray disc laser part of the machine, the next-generation successor to Sony Corp.'s hit PlayStation 2, Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Ken Kutaragi told reporters.

"We decided to focus on the Japanese and U.S. markets," he said at the gaming unit's Tokyo headquarters. "I am so sorry not to be able to answer to all the expectations."

The company is still sticking to its initial global target of shipping 6 million PlayStation 3 machines by March 2007.

But far fewer machines will be available for the launch dates in Japan and the U.S. because of the production problem, Kutaragi said.

In the U.S., about 400,000 PlayStation 3 machines will be available when they go on sale Nov. 17. About 100,000 will be available on the Nov. 11 Japan launch date.

The production problem is causing about a one-month delay that will reduce the company's supply capacity by about a million machines from the original plan, he said.

"We've been working hard to try to tackle the problem, but we see the delay is inevitable," he said.

James Hong, Head of Equity Derivatives Trading at Dresdner Kleinwort in Tokyo, said the news may put another dent in Sony's stock, which fell 50 yen, or about 1 percent, to 5,050 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The market closed before the announcement.

"This seems to be the continuation of a series of bad news. People were prepared to wait for the PS3, but delaying its European launch so they miss the Christmas season is just so not good," he said.

"This is a crucial product given its Blu-ray features, and they need to get it out fast. I doubt this is going to help their stock price," he said.

The set-back is the latest to hit Sony, which is has been overhauling its electronics operations to catch up in key electronics products such as MP3 digital music players.

Last month, its shares tumbled after Dell Inc. and Apple Computer Inc. issued huge recalls of defective laptop batteries made by one of Sony's subsidiaries, Sony Energy Devices Corp.

Kutaragi said other preparation work on the machine was going smoothly, including the "cell" next-generation computer chip. Mass production of the machine is set to start end of September, he said.

Although Sony had initially counted on shipping 4 million PlayStation 3 machines worldwide by the end of the year, that will likely fall to 2 million, he said.

The exact European sales date will be announced later, but it will likely be in the early part of March, he said.

Blu-ray disc is the next-generation video format for the latest DVD recorders and players, but also an essential part of the PlayStation 3.

Yeah so much for the worldwide launch. and only half a million units between two regions at launch, didn't they say it'd be something like 2 million? I'm really not trying to Sony bash but this is just bad business. They fall short of their announcements time and again and they're always the last to admit when they have. Remember "Spring 2006," they were still sticking to that even halfway through spring. And every time it seems like Blu-Ray is the culprit.

    Hmmm....this is distressing news.

Why is it that PS3s can't be reserved at GameStop or EBGames? It seems the only way now to even get one is buying it on launch day at bigger retailers like Best Buy.
Despite what you think, I am very, very real.

That's the last straw. Sony continues to **** me off. First they rip-off every other console on the market, want 600$ for a friggen console and now delay the Euro market?

      A big @#%$ YOU Sony.

Don't ask why. I just find this news funny for some reason.

I think he's referring to how Sony has a HDD in the PS3, like the XBox and the XBox 360 do. And how after Nintendo revealed the Wii controller, Sony mysteriously decided to revamp their controller with some gyroscope technology of their own. Since the Wii doesn't have an HDD, and the 360 doesn't have anything to do with gyroscopes, PS3 is the only one with technology first used by both rival consoles. Hence why Omega might say Sony's ripping them off.

Hell, even the Playstation 1&2 controller is set up almost identical to the Super Nintendo controller. Other systems copied the four button format + shoulder buttons (And why not? It's a wonderful set-up)... but I'm not just referring to that, I mean the size of the controller (height/width/depth) and the shape too. They tacked on a second set of shoulder buttons, and some "handlebars" to the SNES controller and boom... PS controller. Then they upgraded to analog sticks while in competition with the N64... sure they didn't steal THAT from Nintendo (I think Atari used analog sticks first, back in the early 80s), and they had even made their own analog controller for some flying simulation games... but it wasn't until after the success of Mario 64 that they decided to put analog sticks on their main controller. Hell, even SATURN had their 3D Gamepad with NiGHTS after Mario (very closely released though) but before Sony.

So yeah, Nintendo's used to the beat of a different drum, Microsoft has just gotten into the market, and Sega dropped to software. What has Sony originated? At first I thought it was consoles with discs, but Saturn had that first. The only thing they really did "first" was slap TWO analog sticks on a controller instead of one. Everything else was stuff that other companies did first, or at least I think. I may be missing something or forgetting something, or have the facts wrong somewhere. But if I don't, Sony's run in the market has been nothing but borrowed technology and extreme third-party support because... well, it's Sony. Not that that's bad, just they haven't invented much, hardware-wise when it comes to new ideas, compared to the other systems. And two of the things in the PS3 is an HDD (XBox) and a controller with "tilt sensitivity" or some BS (Wii).

Sony did the HDD first. PS2. that expansion bay on the system made just for it was there long before the Xbox existed.

and Sega didnt do the CD thing first either. I believe the japanese PC Engine console was the first.

So what console had a controller where every button was pressure sensitive?
I guess it's which came first, GameCube, with pressure-sensitive trigger buttons, or PS2, with pressure sensitive everything.

As for the news, I doubt I'll get a PS3 at launch, and I don't live in Europe, so none of the news is particularly relvant. I am a little concerned about the blu-ray problems, though. Will this mean that the PS3 will have long-term maintenance problems?

I'd more argue that Sony is copying Microsoft's online strategy to a T, but they'd be stupid not to try something that is working beautifully. Just, you know... add something of value to it.

                        "that expansion bay"

There are expansion bays on damn near every system... but they rarely use them. Or at least, Nintendo rarely does. Hell, you could say SNES was the first of the big companies to use the CD because they were going to... but they never did.

Sony may have had an expansion bay... to add in a HDD. But XBox was the first the COME with an HDD, and they were using their HDD before Sony finally released their HDD add-on. Which proved to be nothing more than a 40 GB Memory Card. Oh.. and a way to play FFXI. Japan got way more uses for it for most games. They finally added some HDD functions for some US games... I think I heard something about you being able to install part of certain games to the HDD to decrease load times, including RPG Maker 3.
(Correction: Sony released their HDD add-on in America in 2004, about two and a half years after the American XBox release. However, their JP release date for the add-on was in 2001, about four months before XBox came out here. I thought the JP release was 2002, not 2001... damn, that was a big gap for shipping it stateside.)

At least XBox let you download more game content and put your own songs on the system to make custom soundtracks for some games.

And I just remembered Sega CD for Genesis... and what japanese game console? What was it called and when was it released? I'm not calling you a liar by any means, I'm just curious as to how far ahead of everyone else they were (I'm still shocked that analog sticks were made by Atari in the early 80s)

Re: Sony just stole Christmas! for Europe

sony announced that the expansion bay was for a hard drive shortly before the system was released in the US. doesnt matter that it came out much later, they intended to put one in.

as for the cd console name, I told you. PC Engine. Also known in the US as the Turbo Grafix 16. it was the first major console to use CDs for games. Before that, it was the japanese only "FM Towns Marty" bu fujitsu. Both came out before the Sega CD, and before the SNES' CD add-on was even in the planning stages.

and if you want to get into analog buttons, I believe Dreamcast did that first. it's L and R buttons are pressure-sensitive.

Sony would've been better off if they didn't try to shove Bl00-REH down our throats.

Yes, not only does the PS3 controller now magically have a gyro system like the Wii, but...
It also has 4 lights which indicate which controller is in what port (Player 1, 2, 3, 4, etc). Plus, there is a round button on said controller which lets you turn the console on/off...

Now name the one console which has the exact same features? =p

From my knowledge we haven't seen the PS3 controller before the XBox360's was shown.
