    RPG Maker Questions

    Hey guys

I came across this board while researching RPG Maker 3, debating whether or not I should invest in it. Game creation of any sort is a foreign concept to me; however, I've always been interested in the idea of creating your own games--specifically RPGs. From what I've learned so far from the website and through word of mouth from my friends, RPG Maker 3 is the easiest to use.

I'd very much like to buy RPG Maker 3. I'm also aware that there are, of course, 2 RPG Makers before that, released several years apart. From what I understand, they'd be difficult to find.

I realize that I would have to do the research myself, but I thought I could get some opinions from those who have used all three RPG Makers, and learn their thoughts and experiences. Which RPG Maker should I start with, or which game would be appropriate for a budding beginner like myself? Right now, RPG Maker 3 is still selling in store shelves, and the only way for me to get previous versions is to find them online at exuberant prices.

Thanks in heartfelt advance for your help.
Despite what you think, I am very, very real.

    Re: RPG Maker Questions

My god, two literate newbies in the RPGM section with less then a week apart! Never thought it could happen.

If game design is new to you, I would say RPGM3. Of course, it has the sad condition of being the newest and thus the most expensive: espeically since you'll also need a USB keyboard to type good stories. A max drive is also helpful to play others games (Although its usually found for $40 with the Action Replay Max Evo.)

But yeah, you don't have to worry about being confused, thanks to my Answers to Basic Questions Thread, Pagerrons Variable and Mode Tutorials, and the two of us (and some others) on-call at the RPGM3 workshop forum.

      Welcome to the pavilion!
I'd also be glad to give you my opinion of all three.

First off, out of all three RPGM2 is the best, in my opinion of course.

      RPGM1:

I've created 1 1/2 games on this one. RPGM1 is easily my second favorite for it's ease of use and flexibility. Many games other than RPG's we're made with this one, even a platforming game.

      RPGM2:

I've created 1 game so far. My personal favorite, as you can pretty much do ANYTHING with this one. The system itself takes time to learn and get used to (which turns people off sometimes), but if you keep at it the rewards are pretty much endless.

      RPGM3:

My least favorite. I've attempted to make a game, but because of how limiting the software is, I can't do much with it. Good on the graphical standpoint though, and if you're good at storytelling (Look up the game "Whispers in the Woods" by Vonwert and you''l see what I mean) this gametool could work out for you. Though there's a good amount of people working on unlocking the potential of this software as we speak. Right now there's a Farming/Dating sim being made for it right now.

If you want RPGM3, go ahead. Though, I'd reccomend trying to find the other two as well. It's better to have 3 choices instead of 1.

Kumo, you'd be suprised at how un-limiting RPGM3 can be with some clever coding. In reality, it's really only the 50 lines of code per event and 20 events per location that limit the game.

Don't forget about RPG Maker XP! I've tried the demo of it. It's pretty neat since you can use your own graphics.

I haven't tried number one, but if you're new to game design, and want some simplicity, go with RPGM3. It has a lot of limitations to make game design easy, with great graphics. If you can figure out ways around the limitations, you can also make some sweet games even. As for the keyboard, any computer keyboard with a USB connection will do fine.

RPG Maker 2 has almost no limitations. It's really high-tech, but requires a lot of study before you can use it.

Since you're a beginner, try RPGM1 or 3. RPGM2 is very advanced and difficult to learn. Although, if you are willing to learn (and can overlook RPGM2's graphics) I would recommend RPGM2 based on its great flexibility.

Those limits can easily be bypassed, moreso than the stupid AI or weapon limitations. With that in mind, the real problems lay elsewhere, in the actual flexibility.

RPG Maker 3 is ideal for beginners. Be aware that you'll have to deal with a bumpy learning curve, but for the most part a little trial and error will get you used to the software at your own pace. You don't NEED a keyboard to type, but it makes things easier.

I know. I'm not bad mouthing RPGM3, it has lots of potential being unleashed as we speak.

I just can't find a groove with it like I did with RPGM1 and 2.

I miss the VFX that they don't have in RPGM3.

I'm very happy with what I've seen so far. Most likely, I'm going to start with RPG Maker 3 and get my bearings. Then, I'll look into finding the first and second games.

Again, thanks for your help, everyone.

In order of difficulty, go from 3, to 1, to 2. Unless you have a good memory and are a super-fast learner, that might be the best way to go.

                        Re: RPG Maker Questions

Well, I could go into how much I really don't like RPGM3 (it's very limiting, and don't try to convince me otherwise), but instead I'm a little bit forced to recommend it in your case, since you're just starting out. Although if you're willing to spend close to a month learning how the tool works (and don't mind looking at chibi graphics), I would recommend RPGM2 more. Very powerful, it is.

RPGM1 is actually my favourite of the three console RPGMs, but it's restricted to Genesis-era graphics and sound. If you don't mind creating a 2D game (with a few annoying but tolerable limits), typing with a controller (no keyboard support), and having to buy a hard-to-find transfer device (but it's not expensive), you should check it out as well.

And "exuberant prices"? RPGM1 and RPGM2 aren't really that expensive, and any place that sells them for a high price are making them a bit overpriced.

Yeah, I got my RPGM2, I believe it was gently used, for only 14 bucks. Not exactly a major hit on my wallet.

As for RPGM3, I had to order it off the internet for 40 bucks, but that was like a week after it came out.

                            Re: RPG Maker Questions

Well, I was able to pick up RPG Maker 3 today for 29.99 at a local Gamestop--the last new copy available, and there weren't any used ones unfortunately so I wasn't able to save money.

After playing around with it for an hour or so, I'm very happy with what I've seen thus far. The limitations in some areas do hurt the game a little, but not enough to detract from the experience entirely.

I also browsed the internet and found excellent deals on RPG Makers 1 and 2. Mind you, they're used copies, but they're dirt cheap. I placed orders on them and should get them sometime next week.

Cool! Just ask if you need help on any of them. Although, you should probably use the search feature before you ask any questions, just to make sure it hasn't been asked already.
