Venture Bros. (and adult swim in general)

I've been watching Adult Swim for quite some time now, and I like some of the shows up there. I was trying to explain Venture Bros. to a friend of mine who hasn't seen it, and aside from it being a play on the old Jonny Quest shows... I didn't quite know how to describe it. It has a weird sense of humor and there's something different about the show compared to say... American Dad, Squidbillies, Boondocks, Futurama, Family Guy or others (can't remember other shows).

The animation looks... different, and the sound (or rather voice actors) have something different about them. I wish I could describe what I'm talking about but I can't.

Does anyone else know what I'm trying to say? Or is it just me and I'm a raving lunatic? About the look and sound/voices in it being... unique? I know I heard somewhere the show's general theme is failure, but that's not quite what I'm talking about.

Oh, and on the topic of this stuff (although I'm sure it's been discussed a million times) what shows on adult swim do people watch? I really like Venture Bros., Family Guy and Futurama are pretty good, and American Dad is ok to watch at times. The rest are tolerable, except I hate Moral Orel and 12 oz mouse.

Yeah Venture Bros is pretty funny, and quite different from other comedy cartoons. Then again so are all of the Adult Swim shows. Try to explain to people how a show about a happy meal essentially can even be remotely funny, let alone hilarious (at times).

As for adult swim I watch most of them except only about half the newer shows. I find Tom Goes to the Mayor just unwatchable, and did not like Squibillies, 12 oz Mouse, Oblongs, Minoriteam (pretty good concept but horrible follow through), or Super Milk Chan. But Aqua Teen, Sealab, Birdman, Perfect Hair Forever, Robot Chicken, and Home Movies are great. Boondocks, Metalocalypse, and Mission Hill are ok.

It was actually pretty funny when we were watching Aqua Teen Hunger Force in my Postmodernism class, and the teacher was trying to explain it to people. A lot of them still didn't get what was going on at the end of a few episodes either.

Of course really none of these shows have a point (some to more of a degree than others), and their randomness is what makes a lot of them great. Which makes all of them a you have to be there kind of jokes (or in this case have to watch it).

And you don't like Moral Orel, I think it's pretty funny most of the time, then again being raised with strong Christian influences, and now loathing those does make it a bit more relevant.

I checked the wikipedia entry for Venture Bros... apparantly they debated renewing the show and it took so long for the next season because they use traditional animation style of drawing it frame by frame. I checked Family Guy and Futurama wikipedia entrys and couldn't find anything about their style. That might be the visual difference I'm referring to... but I don't even know if you could see that difference. I don't know much about animation.

As for the sounds... I still don't know how to describe it. Watching Family Guy or Futurama... they sound like what they are, a cartoon TV show. But Venture Bros. doesn't sound like that to me... it sounds different. Like overhearing a conversation or something, rather than watching a show.

If I don't know what the hell I'm talking about, just ignore me... it IS 4:00 in the morning after all.

I can feel ya man. I my eyes are playing tricks on me. BTW, I wish Venture Bros. was on, that show rocks. Plus Brock Samson could kill a T-rex in nothing but his undies and a bowie knife. I wanna grow up to be THAT.

I liked Home Movies because it didn't sound like a cartoon.

I'm also a huge fan of Aqua Teen.

Re: Venture Bros. (and adult swim in general)

The new season is still playing, it was on twice tonight.

And I do know what you mean a bit Smurvis. Of course like a lot of their other shows this one is meant to be a spoof, and really meant to be a more dry comedy. I personally think it's supposer to be a mix of action and comedy, so unlike Futurama or Family Guy where the whole show is centered around comedy (Futrama a little less so), this one is meant to be somewhere in the middle between serious and comedic. Not that it normally takes it self too seriously just there are those moments in there. I don't think a lot of the jokes in their are meant to be fall out of your seat funny (except maybe the death montage), and they definitly don't appeal to the mass culture.

The voices do also reflect the slightly more serious nature (though brocks voice has been in quite a few cartoons), but really their not all that different to me. So out of most of the adult swim cartoons Venture Bros does seem to be one of the closer ones to actually having a plot, or at least it feels like it does.

Venture Bros. has a budget and talent. That’s probably the difference you’re thinking about.

I liked Mission Hill, sad to see it end so soon. Futurama of course, Family Guy (I like Futurama more, though), Robot Chicken, and FMA are also good, IMO.
For some reason, I don't like Venture Bros. Dunno why.

I dunno, I think Adult Swim has become a parody of itself, almost every new show takes on the "bizzare for the sake of being bizzare" mantle, and doesn't bother to do anything else with it's formula. Venture Brothers (for it's great writing and humor) and Robot Chicken (for it's celebrity cameos and stop-motion style) are really the only original shows I watch on AS, anyways.

I think I'm the only one who doesn't like Venture Bros.

There are some good moments and Brock is cool I guess but overall I didn't enjoy it and no one can explain to me why exactly it's so brilliant

I like it because its a play on the original Johnny Quest.

Yep. Didn't Race, the bodyguard on Johnny Quest, appear as a cameo on an episode?

I think the only reason i kinda like Venture Bros is that it makes fun of itself and its silly rip off of Johnny Quest. I like ATHF most of the time, i cant stand squidbillies, and Tom goes to the mayor is the STUPIDEST show, ever made, EVER! I cant stomach watching it.

I enjoy morel orel though, but i think thats mostly because of how it makes fun of christianity for the most part.

I dont like most of the shows that originated on adult swim though. I cant stand Squidbillies either.

Canadas getting the backwash of CN.

All those crappy shows are on Teletoon now. I only watch Futrama on there anyway though, so meh.
