Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, Australian media said. He was 44.

Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.

Still a shock though. I mean... damn. That's gotta suck. The guy ****s around with crocodiles, snakes, all kinds of dangerous animals all the time... and he gets killed by a damn stingray.

****! I really liked him too. He was crazier than a loon, but he was a good man. Sad to hear him go out like this. A ****ing stingray!?! RIP, we will miss you and your crazy adventures...

He was a very good man. Even came to Belize once and spoke against the hydroelectric dam when it was in its planning stages (not that it did much good in the end, unfortunately). One of my mother's good friends had a long discussion with him about it, and said he was very friendly and supportive.

Granted, he was a madman, and this comes as no surprise considering the stuff he did on a regular basis. It's almost like a heroic tragedy.

RIP Steve Irwin

(and don't underestimate stingrays. A friend of mine got stabbed in his calf by one once -- the puncture was deep and his entire leg swelled. It was a horrid sight to behold. He couldn't walk for several weeks.)

It's a sad day for all his fans and probably the worst day ever for his family and friends. It's one of those things where people will try to take comfort in the fact that he died doing something he loved but inside they can't help wishing they'd tried to convince him to stop so he'd still be here. Probably the worst thing is his son will mostly know him from videos including all the reports from people saying he endangered him with that crocodile a while back. He's probably out there in spirit world petting a dinosaur or a dodo bird or something.
