Is it wrong to play cheap?

i was playing soul calibur II with some people last night. i use nightmare and i won about 12 in a row before i just handed the controller off. i think everyone was getting kinda mad because i was playing "cheaply". they especially didn't like the move where nightmare launches the opponent up and then catches them as they come back down for free damage. and then, when they're on the ground, i try to get as many free shots as i can. but, nobody seems to like that either...

now, as i understand it, in fighting games, the goal is to win. yes? so, i use moves that get me to win. is that cheap? it's not like i only used ONE move the whole time. i blocked, i parried and whatever else. i just say that's the way nightmare is supposed to be played if you're trying to win matches. what do you guys think?

Yeah, I hate when people yell at you for being cheap when all you're doing is trying your best to win. Playing cheap is mashing buttons and getting the other person stuck in a corner so they can't get out and then you keep doing the same attack over and over.

The goal is to win. But sometimes, especially with your friends, it helps to have some general "rules" in regards to "fair" play in order to keep things FUN.

Some characters are more powerful than others, so switching off every now and then helps. Dave and I use the following rules for street fighter (unless things get ugly):

        1) No extended corning. Three hits should be enough.

        2) No overuse of a single character. If you beat someone consistantly with one character, it's time to prove your skills and switch off to another character.

        That's about it.

if someone beats me, even if it's in a "cheap" way, i really don't mind. a win, is a win. it's up to me to get better, get smarter or find ways around whatever's being used on me.

If I play against Dave in SFII, I can use Bison's psycho crusher to kill him and he'll never land a hit. But it's more fun for both of us if I don't do that.

Gaming etiquette is a little different for me when I'm playing with friends. When I'm at the arcade, there are no "rules." You have to defend your quarters.

Depends on if you're playing for fun or competitively.

For fun, people get ****** off when you use "cheap moves." Not just one move over and over again.

Competitively... if you're playing with "pros" then cheap moves shouldn't matter. All the pros say cheap moves are easily countered if you know what you're doing, so anyone who bitches about cheapness in a competition... well, sucks.
              Keep the change.

It bugs me when people play "cheap" because if I wanted to play a boring fighting game with no depth I would be playing Smash Bros.

Eh, for me, I'm pretty lax on that kind of thing. If it's not one of the never-ending combo things, or a single move over and over, you can get a counter strategy.

However, in all of the budokai games, we lynch anyone who uses a ki blast on a prone character. Thats just wrong.

Budokai... worst fighting game ever. Okay, second worst. But the worst was still a Dragon Ball Z game.

Scrub of the Future: Captain Kathryn Janeway. Voyager would have been home ages ago if it weren’t for her silly rules. (Don’t watch Voyager.):
                        LOL.

The article was alright. The thing is though, if you keep doing moves and techniques your friends cant find a counter for, you're playing cheap. If you know how to counter it, give them advice and everyone can start having fun.

I think it is cheap to play cheap. Cause then it's no fun for your opponet.

Plus, playing cheap is almost like hax, just plain unfair to the other players. (A lot of people have been hacking in this one MMO game I play, which is why I bring this up.)

i enjoyed this. in regards to my SCII nightmare play, you really can't do anything about getting caught on the ground sometimes or even getting hit in the air, but there are ways to stop it before it happens.

There's a big difference between hacks and utilizing things already in the game.
