    Network Problem

Allright ever since I opened up some ports for Starcraft on my router my network has become a battlezone. After a few days of constant random disconnects it has seemed to stable itself and stuff. Hoever something is scanning ports like crazy on my PC and I have no idea what it is...

What should I do to clean out my network? I allready checked for spyware and viruses with no success..

Well I believe there are some free port scanning applications out there, and if you don't have a personal firewall I recommend getting Zone Alarm on your computer.

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ This program may help you, not sure if it does port scans but it does look for trojans and the like
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&l...an&btnG=Search try this search for some more.

And Zone alarm is here http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...g=en&lid=ho_za.

                Re: Network Problem

A lot of "hackers" (AKA scriptkiddies) hang out on Starcraft. A port scan is when someone actually uses one of those peices of software that True pointed out and scans your IP for open (hackable) ports.

Yes, often times spyware will leak in after a port scan, but more than likely they sounds like someone is peaking in to see what else you have hanging open on the network.

You don't need ZoneAlarm if you have a router. Every modern router has a built in firewall. What would ZoneAlarm do? Waste your resources. I only recommend software firewalls to people completely "naked" to the internet. Software firewalls cause more problems then solutions 9/10 times.

As much as I loved it, it was time to change it.

I got a firewall and everything. The port scans are coming from my host computer (the one the router is hooked to) I don't really understand what it means but I'm not too worryed now.

                    Re: Network Problem

Well software firewalls can also alert you to programs sending data out of your computer, something not always easy to determine with a hardware firewall. And my software firewall normally takes up hardly any resources (my virus scanner is much worse though I still need that). So if you care about your privacy having a software firewall can be helpful to stop certain programs on your computer from accessing the internet.

Though I admit they can get in the way when trying to play some games over the net, though most games have options to get past firewalls so you can play.
