    Starcraft installation help!

Hey I need the help of someone who is very good with computers. (or at least knows more about them then me.) I've had starcraft for a long time, prolly since around 2000, and I used to love to play it. However recently I got aa new computer and when I went to install it when I put the CD in and click on the installer this message comes up: "Couldn't open installer archive. You must run the installer on the Starcraft CD." I have no idea what it's talking about because I AM using the installer on the starcraft CD. I really want to play this again, but I have no idea how to install it! If anyone knows what it's talking about and how I can fix it, please, tell me. You'll have my eternal thanks!

Explore the CD, look for and install icon in there.

      That might work.

hope you can get it to work.

Where are you activating the installer from? The run/browse feature? Or the autoplay from the cd?

Either one you tried, try the other.

If you have a sepearte disc drive, try running the CD in the other one.

            This is true.

Ya, I found the install icon, labeled: "Starcraft Installer." But it just says the message when I click on it.

Err.... I'm not sure what you mean, I'm on a mac, which may make it different, but I insert the CD and it pops up on my desktop, I click on it, and then click on the "Starcraft Installer" icon.

            Nope, only one CD drive.

There's 5 things on the CD, A "Desktop Folder" which is empty, the "Starcraft Installer" which doesn't work, the "Preview" that shows me Diablo 2, a pdf document titled "Starcraft Manual", and a "Installer Archive", which when I click on the archive, it displays the same message as when I click on the installer.

Anyway, I'm thinking the reason I can't play it is because the game is too old for my new computer thanks for the help anyway though!

Maybe Starcraft can't run on the newer Mac OS.

Yeah, I'm on OS X, and when I try to run the installer it boots up Classic, which is bascially a smaller version of OS 9 for running OS 9 applications. Most older games work on that but maybe starcraft is different. I do know however that the disk is a hybrid and runs on windows XP as well, and once I get a intel mac I'll put XP on it and play it on that. Till then, no starcraft for me :P

                  Re: Starcraft installation help!

Could be that as I had a similar problem with Red Alert on Windows 2000, as it will only install on a system that has 98 or 95. The worst part is it was part of one of those rerelease collections (not the newest one), so you think they would have fixed that.

The other option you might have is making a backup copy of the CD and use a virtual CD drive to run it. It could be because your CD ROM is too fast, as I know that is one of the protection schemes used today to determine if you're running the CD, or running it off a hard drive. Other than that check blizzards site and google for support.

                    Eureka!

I got it to work! Now normally when I have a problem with somthing, the company that made it is the last place I go when I need help. However after much frustration of trying to figure out how to get the installer to work I gave up and went to blizzard.com. As it turns out, blizzard's support was extremely helpful in identifying the problem. As it turns out the installer was too old to run on OS X and Classic doesn't support the installer, thus it wouldn't let me install. Luckily blizzard made a OS X Native Installer for starcraft that allowed me to installer starcraft and the expansion onto OS X, and I don't even have to use the Classic application to play the game!

It goes to show how I guess you can really trust some companies when you're having trouble with their software. And thanks to everyone to tried to help me out with this problem ^^ See you all on Starcraft!

That cool. Glad it worked. We're usually on the East Channel Pavilion.
