So, I talked about this in the Dungeons and Dragons thread I made a while back, but it was lost in general game discussion so I thought I'd give it it's own thread. Basically, Living Greyhawk is a campaign that takes the game world of Greyhawk and matches sections of the game world to different states in the US and many other countries. It's incredibly fun, and, over here at least, very newbie friendly. So if you want to play DnD and you can't find a group, or if you want to play DnD even though you have no knowledge of it, Living Greyhawk is the way to go.
For those just starting out, there is a basic game thats a good first buy. (Make sure it's the one that includes the soft-cover players handbook, the real gem of it.) Although you'll want the Monster Manual 1 so you know what you're up against and the Dungeon Masters Guide (all of these are 3.5, by the way) you can eek your way through with the PHB if you want to try before buying the other two books (with a combined price tag of $60, you don't want to impulse buy.)
So yeah, the wizards site has a guide for new LG players. After you get the players handbook, you can download and print off a Living Greyhawk character sheet.
While you can find the links yourself, post your state and I'll find places to play for you.
