Why is my laptop playing games so slow?

Let's look at Guild Wars
This has been getting on my nerves recently I have no idea why.

Let's look at Guild Wars:

This is what is reccomended
* Windows® XP/2000/ME/98
* Intel Pentium® III 1GHz or equivalent
* 512 MB RAM
* ATI Radeon 9000 or GeForce 4 Ti Series Video Card with 64MB of VRAM
* Internet connection

This is what I have

Windows® XP
Intel Pentium M 725
1280 MB RAM
ATI Radeon 9000
Cable Internet Connection


I have a laptop so I can't change my graphics card, but that should not matter, In terms of Guild Wars.



I have been running slowly for a long time now and It is getting on my nerves.

I have run SpyBot, Adaware, even Norton and I have not detected any spyware or any adware.

Any help?

recommended specs are still gonna run like crap. and your video card is pretty much at the low end still, so that is probably why you are having problems.

Yeah, I posted this on the GW forums in GameFAQs, they said the same thing.

Argh, I love my lappy but because the graphics card is integrated with my motherboard I cannot exchange it.

As far as I can see I cannot update my drivers either, for some odd reason I can't find an update for 9000.

And people wonder why I play console games...

There's probably some spyware or something strange going on that your scans can't find. Happens once in a while. I'd suggest going all over your computer with a fine-toothed comb and deleting everything you don't need. Then defrag and stuff. Get rid of all your internet files like cookies (just for now) and basically clean your computer.

My computer slowed down once and I couldn't find the problem. Several hours later after cleaning it up it worked perfect. Still don't know exactly what went wrong with it.

Well a couple of other things you could try would be turning off indexing for your drives if that's on (usually will make your hard drive usage go up a lot). Then right click on My Computer goto properties and click on advanced, then goto performance settings. Look at your virtual memory settings and set your initial and recommended size to be the same, and set them to 1.5 times your memory. Another thing to look at would be what startup tasks you have running and what process you have running (should be right click on my computer and goto manage then look at the services, see which ones are running and what executable they are tied to by looking at their properties). Basically open up your task manager and google every program exectable listed (on the processes tab) on there to make sure you need it. Also as others have mentioned clean your drive, do a search for all folders named Temp or TMP and clear them out. Other than that there aren't too many other things to do about it, without editing some registry values, but they won't provide too much performance enhancement here. You might try setting HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\DisablePagingExecutive to 1 instead of 0 so the kernel is never paged out to disk (info here http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...ntry/29931.asp).
The only other value I think may be of use is detailed here http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...ntry/29938.asp if you happen to know your processors L2 Cache and it is set improperly.

Another possiblity is your laptop is getting too hot, as this will make thermal throttling kick in and lower the speed of your processor.

You think that if I put my laptop on a fan while I am playing, it will cool down?

Does anyone know if there is any way to change graphics card on a Dell Inspirion 600m? I've looked around and I think that that because of the motherboard and graphics card are integrated I can't.

Yep, you can't. I tried upgrading my Graphics card on a Dimension Desktop Tower model, but because of integrated graphics there's no AGP slot, and there's not a lot of PCI graphics cards that are powerful.
