    Classic Films

Recently I've been trying to catch some of those films that are considered "divine" in the critical eye. In the last week I have watched "Casablanca" and "Lawrence of Arabia".

Casablanca: It's a pretty damned good movie. Sometimes it seems as if the dialogue is too high-strung, though, if that makes any sense. I don't like it when every line is spoken like it is supposed to be "hit out of the park". It makes the movie seem unearthly and, at times, preachy. On a whole, however, the movie is excellent and I liked the suspense, especially towards the end.

Lawrence of Arabia: Now this movie I really liked. I've always liked desert settings, and this one has plenty of that. The only beef I had with the movie was that sometimes there were too many periods with no dialogue. As much fun as it is to see legions of Arabs riding around on camels, it does get rather tiring after a while. Seeing the evolution of Lawrence throughout the film was a treat, however. Plus, some of the side character were quite entertaining, and I especially like Alec Guinness as the Prince. He had some very witty lines and other times what he said just really made you think. Ironically, this movie seems to really mirror what is happening in Iraq right now.

Of all of the classic films, I think that Citizen Kane is the most overrated. I can see how it is ahead of its time, but the movie really did not entertain me.

Check out the 1958 flick 'I Want to Live'. The plot is about a female on death row. Very heavy subject matter for the 50s and had a killer soundtrack...

This is great! I love movie recommendations, and there are many older films I still need to see.

I Thank a Fool - A very suspenseful movie involving a convicted female doctor who was recently released, is hired by the prosector that put her away to take care of his wife. As a lot of suspense and mystery.

                  Pretty good movie.

Entertaining film and brilliant film most certainly aren't the same thing.

                    Casablanca's screenplay is INCREDIBLE.

I saw Laura last night. It is the gayest movie about three guys fighting over a girl that there can ever be.

The Seven Samurai - Great movie, freaking LONG though. In the end, though, it was very human and it really touched me at the end. I've really wanted to see the anime miniseries based on it because I enjoyed the Kurasawa original so much. My favorite character was the wannabe samurai who wasn't classicly trained, but relied on his own intuition and "street smarts" to kick ass. I swear a bunch of characters are based off this guy cuz I think he looked like Haomaru.

Lawrance of Arabia - I freaking LOVED this movie too!

Metropolis - It's a silent movie, and can be a little cheesy at times, but DAMN! I can see why it's held in such high regard. The sets and scene choreography, and some of the images will stick in your mind forever.

Raging Bull - Deniro is pretty hot when he's young and in shape! But seriously, this is an acting tour de force by Bobby D. Watching it made me even more interested in the guy he plays, Jake "The Bull" LaMotta, who is damn near indestructible in Fight Night Round 3 (and rightfully so).

I really hadn't watched any classic movies until I took a Film as Art class last semester. We watched a lot of good movies starting from early silent pictures to modern greats. I think my favorites were probably Hitchcock's Notorious and Citizen Kane. Those were the ones I chose to write critiques on. The only thing we watched I didn't like wat Koyaanisqatsi.

Treasure of Sierra Madre is probably my favorite "classic" flick. Eminently cool, quotable, and manly as ****.
