I'll grant you Alien is slower-paced, but it's meant more as a suspense/horror film than the sci-fi action fest that Aliens is. I just appreciate the mood conveyed by the original. If you consider it a horror film, then it's probably one of my favorites (assuming, of course you consider Roman Polanski's Repulsion a horror film as well, not to mention Rosemary's Baby).
Alien and Alien 3 are alike.
Aliens and Alien: Resurrection are alike.
I happen to like the sci-fi action fest of Aliens. Alien had the best ending. Alien 3 went back to the "one alien kills everyone" motif, and it seems that much more terrifying when you simply don't have the weaponry or means to fight something like a xenomorph. Alien: Resurrection seemed to me kind of pointless and a "let's continue the franchise" film, but it also had the best acting and what seemed like the best lines.
If given a choice between all four, I'll watch Aliens first, and then Alien: Resurrection. Then I'll go for Alien and finally Alien 3.
I also will never watch Alien vs. Predator again. Specifically because they didn't include the predator alien except as a kind of bonus "just in case we get a sequel" additive.

I love the original Alien. The story, effects, and gradual revealing of the Xenomorph was great. It makes a great horror movie, too.
Now I know most people are wondering why I ranked A3 over Aliens.
Well as much as I like James Cameron, Michael Biehn, and Bill Paxton, Aliens, after a recent viewing (bear in mind Ive seen it over 20 times), seems way dated as an action film. That and I just can't watch it anymore without nitpicking all the military goofs. It's still a favorite film of mine, though.
I prefered Alien 3 (by a sliver, mind you) simply because Ripley as a character was so isolated and I liked the prison/psuedo monestary with the neu-religious undertones setting. That and the different take on the Xenomorph was welcomed. Also, the ending was a little depressing (well, less now, thanks to the sequel).
As for the order, Alien > Aliens > Alien 3 > Alien: Resurrection > Alien Vs. Predator.
I still remember for some reason, being in the oddest crowd and AvP. Everyone was laughing and yelling at the screen with ridiculous comments. Usually I hate when people talk in the theatre, but it was ok because in a half full crowd, just about every person was just laughing and trying to make other people laugh. I also got to make lousy puns for a few hours. Cold shoulder...

I have a book of his art...that guy definitely lives up to my namesake. Everything it seems involves biomechanical sex. The head of the alien itself was made to resemble a phallus, for crying out loud.
A vs P-I purposely left that one off the list because it's not part of the quadrilogy.
I love both the first and second movies:
Aliens > Alien > Alien 3 > Alien Res
I was scared @#%$less of Alien 1. Never got into Alien 3.
Alien is slightly better than Aliens, just because of the look of everything and it being more realistic due to the horror aspects.
Aliens I’ve seen it so many times I can’t stand it anymore. It’s more of a dumbed down action flick without the claustrophobic fears of the first. But overall it’s still a fantastic movie I loved back when it first came out.
Ailen 3 was ok. I hated what they did to the characters from the second movie.
At least Elliot’s music made up for it, so watching it wasn’t all too bad.
The characters in Resurrection were so darn terrible, the camera movements gave me a headache and did I mention the characters were horrible?
The only good thing which came from the movie was the score, the visuals with the Alien’s excessive slime and look of that of the original.
AVP was by the worst movie of both the Alien and Pred series. (still slightly better than "Alien 4")
Everything in AVP was wrong. The film makers didn't do their research, not in the least bit. It's an insult to Erich Von Daeniken's theories.
