Ugh, well I didn't have high hopes for the movie. A horror film featuring ALL female leads? I was expecting an hour and a half of heavy breather and "oh my god, oh my god." ********.

The good news was that this movie for the most part was not that, but what we got instead wasn't much better. Lame shock scares, cardboard characters a finale that makes the whole movie feel worthless and a waste of time.

And let's face it people, Gollum, no matter how many times you multiply him just isn't scary.

1.5 out of 4 in my book.

AT LEAST THE SAW 3 TRAILER IS RIGHT BEFORE. HE GOES "HELLO, AMERICA" IN THIS ONE.

I say "WHY STOP THERE?!"

The first I heard of this movie was an in-game poster in Anarchy Online. 'Nuff said.

I could tell from the first sight of it that it would suck. They pretty much said it was going to be a gorefest. I'm fine with gore, but lately they've been adding more shock value and taking away the horror.

At first I didn't care for the movie at all.

Then I saw who the director is.

THE SAME GUY WHO DID DOG SOLDIERS. I love Dog Soldiers. Perfect blend of suspense and camp. It truly is a mix of Predator, Jaws and Evil Dead as its box describes.

The rave reviews The Descent's been getting (84% at Rotten Tomatoes?! Doesn't that make it one the best movies released all year!?) and the director had my hopes up but now I'm not so sure.

Miami Vice shattered all faith in cinema for me (until SoaP anyway and even that's supposed to be awful ) so I'm not too strung out about it anyway.

And that is the hype I was talking about. Trust me you do not get any more typical and predictable than The Descent; the movie had absolutly no point and aside from the somewhat primal climax there was no real plus to it.

I really would've perfered if they made it more hokey and let you have some damn fun with it instead of being so serious cause there was no payoff in the end.

And if you're not enjoying yourself during the movie and nothing happens in the end; well I guess you wasted a good amount of time.

PS; the movie also takes forever to get started.

PPS; remember Richard Kelly and Kurt Whimmer? Yeah they also had good movies out of the gate but now suck (If you consider DOnnie Darko good).

See, that's what Dog Soldiers was like. Perfectly goofy and fun. Memorable characters to boot!

BTW, Gollum appears next in Pulse!

EVERYONE SHOULD RENT THE ORIGINAL PULSE (KAIRO) AND DOG SOLDIERS AND GET ALL YOUR FRIENDS OVER.

edit: Very good point about first/second-time directors. Add M. Night to the list.

The original Pulse was good.

I considered checking it out since I like Alien, but then I realized that those TV Spot review quotes are always out of context.
