Another World: Collector's Edition (Includes free games :D)

Note: please tell me if you can't see the screenshots so I can fix them.

This is a few months old but I haven't seen anybody talk about it so I want to bring it up. *In April, Eric Chahi released a hi-res version of Another World (Out of this World for Americans). *For those who haven't played it (shame on you) it's a sidescrolling puzzle/adventure that came out in 1991. *

The ENTIRE GAME was made by Chahi which includes animations (he rotoscoped his little brother), graphics, programming, and boxart. *Although the game's pretty "old-school" (READ: cheap deaths, check-point saving, etc.) it tells a REALLY excellent and emotional story and boasts a unique science fiction universe with beautiful hand-animated graphics. *It wasn't that popular but Fumito Ueda (Ico, Shadow of the Colossus) and Lorne Lanning (Oddworld) were clearly inspired by this game for their own projects.

    Original 1991 Amiga version.

    New windows xp hi-res version.

The game is shareware and costs 7 euros for the full version (about 10 USD) but it's a really good game and I recommend that everyone who appreciates games should play it as it was one of my first games and I enjoyed it when I was little.

    Gameboy Advance Version

For those that don't want to shell out the dough, you can download the Gameboy Advance version (it's freeware). *You can upload it to a flashcart or use an emulator. *It's based on the DOS release and it's pretty smooth.

    Gameboy Advance Version

    OnEscapee
A game made by a Hungarian team that draws inspiration from Chahi's work.* It's now freeware.

Useless Trivia + Other Games By Chahi/Delphine

Despite common belief, Eric Chahi only made 3 games (plus a few random unpublished games).* Since I'm a big fan of his work and all works inspired by him, I'll blabber about them here:

    Infernal Runner
My first game on my old C64.* It was a horror/platformer and featured grisly death scenes and haunting music.

    Flashback: Quest for Identity
Although it wasn't made by Chahi, it had a similar style and was billed as part of the Another World universe (even though, officially, it wasn't).* It's more cinematic and actioney; kind of like a videogame form of Blade Runner.* There's a rewrite of the engine called REminesce which is available to download.

    Heart of the Alien
Despite common belief, it's not a sequel to Another World as Delphine Software billed it to be.* Chahi wanted Another World to end ambiguosly but DS wouldn't allow it.* It's only available for the Sega CD and it contains Another World plus the "sequel."* I bought a Sega CD off Ebay JUST for this game.

    Fade to Black
A really bad shooter based off Flashback.* It completely ruined the style but it's a nice collector's item.

    Heart of Darkness

Chahi's last original game, this took 4 years to make and it's available on the PS1 and PC.* It's really good but it was overshadowed for newer, 3D games.

Chahi stated he was designing a new game and trying to get back into the developers hotseat but information is pretty lax so far.

I fixed the first 2 and I'll get to the rest in a few minutes.

EDIT: Okay, I think they're fixed. I previously uploaded the screenshots with an uploader that's exclusive to another site (php code that doesn't allow images on any other website). I can see them because I'm a member but tell if everything looks alright now.

I could never figure out games like these and Oddworld. They're just confusing.

I LOVED these games. I beat Out Of This World (that's what I knew "Another World") AND Flashback. They were great games. I also beat Oddworld, and Blackthorne was a pretty good game by Blizzard inspired by that type of gameplay. I never got to play "Heart Of The Alien" (which I thought was Out Of This World II), and I got Fade To Black cuz I loved Flashback.

I'd love to see more games like this...maybe on the portables. I'm playing through Grim Fandango now as well, and I wish that would get ported to XBox Live Arcade or a portable as well.

Heart of the Alien is indeed an unofficial sequel. Chahi didn't want a sequel because he wanted the original to end the way it did (and since you've played it, you know how awesome it is) but they made a sequel anyways. I don't know why since it only came out for the CD which sold like garbage.

And if you like Flashback, download ONescapee. It's essentially a spin-off of Flashback right down to the character animations but it's much more cinematic and action packed.

He was behind "Heart of Darkness"? That's one of my favorite games of all time.

Wow, I like the 1991 version a whole lot better than the updated version. that is in comparing screen shots. I remember playing that game before but it's been awhile...

                I'm strange.

The graphics are actually the same as the Amiga version; it's just that the graphics are now up to 1280x783 resolution, the vector sprites are anti-aliased, the backgrounds were redrawn and painted, and there's new rewritten midi music and clearer sound effects. Some of the source code was rewritten to run on Win32 systems.

You can literally set the graphics to the old-school 380x240 resolution, de-activate the anti-alias, and set the backgrounds to 16 colors within the option menu to play the game exactly like it was in the original.

I loved Flashback. I played it on an old Apple Server C60.

I'd love to get my hands on Another World, but, bah. Mac.

Any windows version should run it so as long as your graphics card isn't 10 years old or something. You could probably run it on windows 95... unless you're using a mac or linux.
