E3 is Dead, the E3 Media Festival Lives

E3 is dead and likely gone forever. According to rumors in the game industry, the announcement that E3 will be cancelled or at least scaled back to a shadow of its former self will be coming tomorrow. Apparently the costs have simply gotten too high and the publishers have revolted and decided to concentrate on the smaller shows.

This.........I don't quite know what to feel. So much for the days of looking forward to it. What will this mean for PAX and the TGS will be interesting to see.

Edited: Looking like it's not cancelled, just radically altered to the point that it no longer resembles the giant party it has become.

    Re: E3 is Dead

I always thought of E3 as a massive circle jerk and an indication of everything wrong with videogames these days; a focus on ritzy, expensive flash instead of content. Only the press can go to E3 so it's cheaper and more effective to release whatever information they might have on their own personal websites or even hold shows of their own in their hometowns.

But wouldn't the good people of Oklahoma be like, "A video what!?! Huh, someone has to go wii?"

I'm joking, people. I don't really believe that.

Despite popular and biased opinion on my state, Oklahoma City is quite like any other metropolitan area, only more widespread instead of all crammed together into a few square miles. It isn't until you leave the city that you get the uneducated and scary individuals. I know the locations of about 25 game stores within reasonable driving distance of my house, so there's obviously a market here.

But they'd never bring a convention to Oklahoma, so meh.

E3 wouldn't be nearly as expensive without all the babes, booze, "celebs" and other useless crap that has nothing to do with games.

But either way it's not like I could go to E3 so screw em all.

                DS and Wii aside, right?

I'm not sure how I'd take this. Aside from stuff mentioned here or the Mag, E3 is the only time right now where I hear about stuff I might be interested in.

Nintendo still plays their part in the LOL CONSOLE WARZ and their heads are almost as inflated as Sony's. I'm certain the Wii will be cool but saying it's going to the biggest thing since the second coming is pushing it (obviously an exagerration but before they changed the name Nintendo thought of the Revolution as this super massive product that was better than everyone elses).

E3 is a window for some, but an eyesore to others. Depends on one's purspective.

Considering you can get everything put out at E3 AND MORE I think it's time that the money spent on it just goes to other things (like actually developing a good game).

The internet has pretty much destroyed all forms of contemporary advertising. It's time we start embracing this new postmodern age we're entering

WHAT other shows? PAX is the only other convention I can think of that's American, and picking up E3's slack is a little beyond its scope at the moment. And CES isn't game-oriented enough.

I'd be dang pround of what I've done if I created an innovative gaming console. Meanwhile, Sony thinks that they're gonna win based solely on pretty graphics and the PlayStation name. And they probably will.

Yea but some people (like me) get turned off by arrogance. I think the Wii is a decent looking machine but who are you to tell me that it's going to completely change the way I think about videogames? Aggressive marketing is one tactic that just doesn't work on some people.
