welcome to beginning drawing E101.
in here you will find samples of work
from my students. i will try to keep
it updated with new work. perhaps
this will turn into something funny.
lets begin.
we start the semester dealing with
value, space, depth, and form. what
simpler way to practice these ideas
than to draw lunchbags.
later on in the semester i have them
doing upside down portrait drawings.
what that means is i have them bring
in a nice black and white photo of
anyone they like and i have them turn
that photo upside down and draw it.
its an old idea on how to teach people
to use the other side of the brain to
see form. most people have an entire
library of generic symbols or signs in
their mind of every object, body, face,
feature, etc they have ever seen in
their life. it is these generic symbols
of form that prevent them from being
able to draw. sort of like, if i ask what
does an eye look like? most people
answer by drawing a football shape with
a circle in the middle. this lesson helps
them not make those mistakes. drawing
a portrait upside down actually helps
them see the features of the face and
the values and the character. here are
those images.
