    The scariest game ever...

Way back in the days of yore (christmas of 97) my parents bought me a playstation hoping to keep my loud mouth quiet and my butt in a seat. It came with several interesting games of note including Parappa The Rapper, Discworld, PO'ed, Project Overkill, Final Fantasy VII, Tomb Raider, Wild Arms, and Rayman. However, sealed away in a gigantic ugly box was a game called King's Field. Drawing me with it's twin swords and dragon on the cover, I immediately popped it in first to play it.

Little to say it was something that I "experienced" as opposed to "play." This, my friends, is:

    The King's Field Experience

King's Field starts with no introduction, no opening text, or storyline background. In an old twist on NES games if you didn't have the manual you had no idea what was going on. I have the original box and instructions and I still can't make heads or tales of the story. Apparently you're some sort of royal guy searching for a sword on a mysterious island.

This is where you start; on a lone island in the middle of nowhere. Blackness fills the sky like a limited palette Intellivision game and the only clue you have to your location is a small, almost unnoticeable path in the water (as you can't swim... don't want you escaping do you?). Somber music fills your ears with a slow, melodic sound of rushing waves from the ocean.

Where else to go but forward? Taking a left I spot an object in the horribly short clip distance; a large, grey, pulsating object with glowing red eyes. A slow, raspy breathing sound now fills my speakers as I make sure my dagger (the only item you start with) is equipped and approach cautiously.

Edging closer my mind is filled with pure fright and revulsion as this... THING, a beast straight out of the works of Lovecraft guarding a precious artifact slowly pivots in my direction and mulls over me thinking... thinking about whether my brain would test better fried or mashed. With no other equipment or spells on me I slowly backed away, heart pounding, praying to EVERLOVING GOD this monster wouldn't give chase!

Taking the other fork I come across a small cave with a pool of water in the center guarded by, to my shock and horror, miniature versions of the Krakken-like beast I encountered before. These guys were pushovers and the magical health spa ensured I remained healthy, so I circle-strafed and quickly knifed my opponents to death. Licking my wounds and counting my experience points and gold, I decided to plod onwards in my explorations over this mysterious island.

A few bends, a secret door, and a couple turns later I come across a magical spell and artifact guarded by two multi-headed snails. Thinking them as harmless, I slowly approached only to have one spot me and turn in my direction. Preparing to back away (because snails are slow, you know?) I was to my surprise that the snail reared back and launched a fine poisoneous mist killing me in a nano-second.

Too weak to continue, I turned off the game and unplugged my playstation. Gripping my cold, clammy skin I set up my N64 and began playing Mischief Makers; a much more colorful and upbeat game. As I played, I was slowly drawn to look at the King's Field box... and thoughts began to wash over my brain. This game hooked me... but I no longer had the will to play it and I never would until almost 10 years later.

    My Overall Experience

King's Field was the scariest game to have ever been released. You aren't given a clear goal, there are no NPC's save a few paper thin shopkeeps, there are no helpers, party members, or friendly faces; you're trapped, alone and cold on an island filled with hundreds of monsters who want your BLOOD.

The King's Field series (which has spanned about 6 games as of this topics) is a game created by mental-masochists; the developers have set out to torture the player in every way possible psychologically. I can't sleep at night without that 10 polygon krakken-beast appearing in my mind. I have yet to beat the game, but I own all of the series (including the Japanese only PSP versions) and conquering their poorly written manuals with size 2 font or bad cover art is challenging enough for me.

ASCII Entertainment; I hope your happy. Not even Ultima Underworld or "horror" games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill have touched you in terms of atmosphere and pure adrenaline. If you guys run across this game, don't play it if you're weak of heart or your mind will be torn like me. There probably won't be any more new King's Fields in America thanks to poor sales, but I will continue to support this fledgling series.

...Just thought I might want to share this with everyone. As both a warning and an advertisement.

        Good description Marcus.

I have to say that King's Field 2 was a great game (for PS1). I never played the first one, but I bought King's Field: The Ancient City (for PS2)a few months ago. Cool game, but it isn't as good as King's Field 2.

DUDE. you have GOT to head over to agetec's forum and share info. come on. please. we're going nuts over there. All agetec said to us was that the games play pretty much like the old wizardry games, and that they won't bother releasing them in the US.

and have you stabbed me in TAC? has anyone stabbed me in TAC?

I detect a hint of sarcasm.
I dont. if you let them, the KF games will pull you into their world like no other game can. The atmosphere of the world is haunting.

There probably won't be any more new King's Fields in America
There's no more KF games in development right now, and nothing slated for the future, but Mark Johnson insists that we havent seen the end of the series yet. it just needs time to evolve and have a release window where people won't be so quick to compare it to the elder scrolls games and other stuff that it shares nothing in common with other than the camera's position.

I don't really have much to say since I can't read them (and haven't played it much because I'm stuck behind the language barrier and got fed up with wandering around/useless clicking) but here's some info you can share with your peers from the hour or so I've played of Additional 1 (additional 2 comes out next month).

They are like the Wizardry games except more atmospheric and it plays out more like an RPG than the previous games which were first-person adventures with an rpg style system. You basically wander around a massive dungeon but instead of a full 3D mode, you move across "screens" like you press up and move 10 paces up. You fight monsters in a turn based mode similar to Dragon Quest. There's more character interaction than the other King's Fields but it still makes you feel like you're one man against the world armed with a cheap dagger. There's a heavier focus on spells and traps in this as well as some puzzles that I can't seem to get past because I'm probably missing a Japanese clue.

I didn't give the Additional 1 much of a chance and left it at my parents house when I was on leave. If you want, I can ask my little sister to mail it to me and I can try to get farther and give you guys more info. I preordered King's Field Additional 2 so once that arrives August 14th (release date) I'll give more info.

Anyways, to wet your whistle, here's Additional 1's trailer.

It sucks they won't bother releasing them because there is a shortage of good Japanese RPG's and these games would probably draw in that Ultima Underworld crowd that played first person RPG's. It sucks it's being billed as an Elder Scrolls style game but that's how mainstream kills little games like this. I think it's a great series; a good lesson in level design and atmosphere.

Oh, and I'm not being sarcastic. This game really scared me

I remember eternal ring, that was a cool game because it combined some of my favorite flavors: first person action and the ring combination system from that oasis game sega had for the genesis. I was planning to actually get that game, until I got to a cliff area somewhere, got attacked by bees and chased off until I fell to my death. I got stuck there and don't know where to go.

Um... anyway, FPGs are sweet, maybe I should try this king's field stuff, although I can see why it wasn't received very well.

                        Re: The scariest game ever...

Either that date is wrong (because that's what gamefaqs says) or Lik-Sang had the game a week early because they shipped it to my parents house in Virginia and I got some time in playing it before I had to go back to base. I just called my sister and told her to send it to me so I'll update you guys with more info in a week or so.

EDIT: Yea, my shipping receipt says the 16th so they must have gotten an early shipment. It was Additional 1 that made me go to my local gamestop and search for King's Field again. Luckily enough they had 1 + 2 for $5 each. Now I need to find a copy of that Shadow Gate or whatever it was called.

If you want you can get the game from lik-sang right now for $34. They even have a special for this month (free shipping worldwide!) and shipping form them is pretty expensive so make use of this opportunity.

I love the new boxart for the game and the manual is nice too but like King's Field 2 the amount of text is insane and it's all in Japanese so I can't make heads or tales of it (and my Japanese roommate moved out so I can't get free translations anymore).

EDIT 2: Crap... I just checked my Lik-Sang order info and somehow I ordered TWO COPIES OF THE GAME. Apparently I ordered once with paypal (which said declined) and then I ordered again directly with my card. The paypal one still hasn't been accepted, but if it does get accepted and I get a second copy I might sell it here for a really cheap price. Maybe $20.

I just checked GameStop.com and a copy of Ancient City is in a local Babbage's. I think I should swing by tomorrow (*looks at clock* or today rather) and pick it up.

Hmm... this topic has nothing to do with Silent Hill. Oh well, I did find this game creepy anyway.

I know, I just never saw King's Field as "scary." I really love it (only have King's Field 2) though.
