Goth was an 80s thing, and no goth would ever stoop this low.
Emo was a derivitive of hardcore punk, and had nothing to do with what most people think of when they think of emo today.

I wish the media would get off the goth/emo tangent and onto calling people "deltas" or "subhumans," or something. Dressing in all black and spiking your hair doesn't make you goth. It doesn't necessarily make you anything. Its your actions, and your mental capacity that make you into what you are.

And this boy clearly fails at both.

Bauhaus, the Sisters of Mercy, and Siouxsie & The Banshees were the three major goth bands.
Bauhaus had broken up by the mid 80s. the Sisters of Mercy had long left the goth thing behind by the turn of the 90s, and Siouxsie was making pop music by 1988. Deathrock bands like Rozz William's version of Christian Death were long gone by then, as was the london Batcave scene, and its bands, like Specimen, Alien Sex Fiend, the Cult, etc.

Goth, as a scene, was derived from post punk and new wave, and was ENTIRELY an 80s thing. Just because someone dressed in all black at your high school does not mean that they were goth. Numetal fans are not goth. Grunge fans are not goth. Industrial fans aren't even goth, industrial's just a genre very closely related to goth. And first wave industrial was dead by 1990 too, replaced with stupidly derivitive ebm (electronic body music.)

There may still be some goths around still, those that know the roots of the scene, and still listen to the original bands, but really, the scene is dead.

I care whether or not he is goth, because whether or not I dress in monotone black anymore (and I usually don't), I still listen to LOTS of old goth music, and self identify with the scene. And the media never fails to call killers goth if they had a taste for terrible rapcore metal and black floodpants. And that's doing a WONDERFUL disservice to the reputation of the scene. It's ****ing slander.

I can understand how that could make you feel insulted. Them linking goth to this psychopath. What I'm saying is that if this person was goth, it makes no difference. Being goth wouldn't drive anyone crazy, people do that to themselves.
