My current laptop is just about dead, and I'm looking to buy a new one. I want something that'll run Windows XP and is a general powerhouse, and is preferably quiet as can be. I keep hearing horror stories about brands like Dell and whatnot, so does anyone have any recommendations or warnings? Any advice is appreciated.

Re: I Need a New Laptop
If your not into Macs, go for an HP laptop. Mine was awsome.
Futureshop has a good selection of laptops.

Re: I Need a New Laptop
At everyone's advice here, I've been looking at a bunch of stuff, including MacBooks, and I'm kind of on the fence about the whole thing. The MacBooks are damn sexy, and they have me considering switching over to OS X just to give it a whirl, but I'm a little bit worried about having to acquire all of my programs all over again for a new platform, some of which may not even have ports. Stupid question time: is there some way to run Windows programs on OS X, or would I just have to install Windows on its own partition?

Re: I Need a New Laptop
Thanks to everyone who suggested a MacBook. I bought one last week and am completely amazed at what I've been missing out on by being a Windows user all my life. OS X is completely self-explanatory and an absolute breeze to use, and the damn thing is practically foolproof. Short of doing it intentionally, I don't think it's even possible to lose data with this- even if I run the battery down, it just goes to sleep all purty-like and everything is EXACTLY as I left it when I plug it back in. It's also the quietest computer I've ever had, and easily the sexiest.
Man, this hella pwnz.

Re: I Need a New Laptop
Now get the thing loaded-
adiumx.com - pretty pretty AIM app.
Sizzling Keys - Awesome iTunes companion
VLC - May be the best media player for the Macs. Especially with AVIs and WMVs, which macs are really bad at.
Azeurus - Best Torrent software for the Mac.
Uh yeah. Tons more, but these are pretty much essential for me.
Here's my set-up:
And yeah, you can either install Windows on its own partition. Or use Virtual PC. I've never had good experience with virtual PC, but apparently the latest version wasn't a complete disaster. I don't know if it works well or at all on the intel macs, but if you really need windows(I haven't needed to use a windows machine in years) then I'd check it out.Last edited by Alex; 07-26-2006, 02:26 AM.
