    Traditional RPG's, played out?

This is more of a general poll, but it does come into play in RPG Maker as we are making out games. Because, if you notice, the creaters of RPG Maker games are more innovative than actual professionals.
Personally, I'm not sure if I ever want to play a "traditional" RPG ever again. You know, the basics:
inexplicably evil hero who desires ultimate power threatens a inexplicably old fashioned world and only an inexplicably 'chosen' hero and his inexplicably large or flamboyant weapon (sword, usually) can stop him

personally my favorite rpg's of all time are ones that either completely ignore this template or at least use it, but warp it so much that its super original (xenogears, final fantasy 7, 8, 10; earthbound etc.)

in my current project, I use a "destined hero" and "ultimate evil" scenario, but I plan to twist it just enough to where it's not the same old stuff. And I do away with the whole "Black Mage/Thief/Warrior" class stuff.

RPG Maker 3 specifically, especially challenges you, because of its limitations. It almost forces you to make a "traditional" RPG, but as a result i can't wait till i get my Max drive to check out some of the sure to be innovative games that people have made and will make.

anyway i was just wondering what yall thought about it, are you diggin the troubled main character/cheerful or timid healer love interest/stoic powerhouse combinations or are you sick of it like me, and how does that come into play when you are making yoru games?

Well, if the game is fun, I'll play it wheteher it's cliched or not. And your other question, about making games, I just make what I want to. However, when I hear "Traditional RPG," I usually just think of the gameplay that is standard of them, rather than the plot, so it could be that I just don't care for the plot of any game too much (which explains why I don't like most commercial RPGs).

When I think "traditional", I think of a fantasy setting with swords and sorcery and the occasional ancient advanced technology, turn-based battles, and some guy who wants to destroy the world for some strange reason. My stories almost always come first, so if the story fits in with that sort of tradition, then I'll probably do that. Otherwise I'll be coming up with some new ideas.

I dont think thats true. Look at the RPG Maker 2 scene, where everyone wants to copy zelda.

And nobody wants to copy Legend of Legaia (except me, but I want to do everything).

Yeah, there is around 3 Zelda titles, but SoM is pretty good.

But I disagree with ya though Valk. I'd love to see games like Vanished Nights and Videogamedrome as full fledged games. Those are some examples of poeple being creative with RPGM2. I never truly got creative with Hippy Hunt 2, I just put in what I thought was funny or great, then I just put it in.

But my next game I am really applying myself, and I hope I get it done this year. (if I stop being lazy.)

I think many games in the RPGM community are better than many actual games out there. Part of that is because you get to see someones creativity in such a limited space.

There's far more. for example, 4 were submitted to me via e-mail for the anything goes contest that the creators refused to let me put on the pavilion for download, which got them booted out of the contest.

But you're right, I did overlook that there are some extremely unique games in development for RPG Maker 2.

And everyone else wants to copy Final Fantasy.

Topics like this remind me all the more how important it is to get some of my more original projects finished. Then I can work on the less original games.

My game, "Whispers in the Woods" has no traditional rpg elements in it.

I think you just need to think outside of the box once and while.

But I don't think Traditional RPGs are played out. It just needs to be done in a way that keeps the player's interest. Most rpgs, just end boring you with details of empires, ranks, conflicts, and a bunch of other boring history lessons.

If you want to keep the players interested, then focus on the characters themselves, and bring out the personalities.

IMO, that is an important thing to do even when creating a traditional RPG. It is very possible to make an unique game that holds peoples interests and still be be traditional. I hope that makes sense.

Or, as Swordkata/Whatever his name is now would put it, "Sometimes you have to think outside the dungeon." Or something like that.
