    The anime topic.

There, an anime topic. Now quit whining.

Anyone here have japanese anime? Like, japanese voices w/ enlgish subtitles? Hunter X Hunter is on Ebay, and I am sorely tempted...anyone have good/bad experinces with untranslated anime?

If I could get the Japanese originals with subbing, I would. Though I wouldn't know which anime to start with beyond G Gundam.

That Hunter x Hunter thing sounds extremely suspect. First of all, if it's regionless and has Chinese subtitles, it's a pirated bootleg and you're a selfish cheapskate if you buy it. If it's the real deal, it's a Region 2 DVD and you probably don't have the right kind of DVD player with which to enjoy it. If you do have a Region 2 player, it's up to your personal tastes and preferences whether or not understanding what they say is important to you.

The only anime I have is Devil Lady which I just bought cause it was on sale. I only watched the first episode and then it started collecting dust like every other DVD I acutally buy. Yet if I rent a TV season DVD set I watch the whole thing in two days.

I still remember watching Mobile Suit Gundam in 1988, raw japanese, no subs at all. tapes that were sent over via one of my brother's navy pals. getting 3 gundam series over to the US in their entirety was a pain in the ass.

anime fans these days have it easy.

Yeah, back in the day, Valkysas could only watch anime on cave walls. In Japan.

              I just started watching Lain.

I think the creators of that show watched a bit too much David Lynch.

              But I'm not complaining.

Although every episode seems to end abruptly and I'm like "OKAY!?"

Lain... I love that series. The perfect blend of traditional cel animation (characters) and CG (backgrounds/FX). Also, a story that is very difficult to wrap your head around, even after seeing it several times... Maybe that's just me.

I've been watching Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade and in spite of it's horrible, horrible name it's very good. I would recommend it.

Plot Synopsis: Ten years after the end of World War II; anti-terror policeman Fuse gets suspended from service after the suicide by self-detonation of a young terrorist girl during an operation, as he failed to shoot her in time. When he tries to gather some information about her, he meets her sister and befriends with her. Both get dragged into the rivalries between the administration of the police and the counterterrorism commando unit 'Jin Roh' (human wolves).

Edit: I've also been watching Elfen Lied, and it's good too. If a tad fanservicey for my tastes.

Plot Synopsis: The Diclonius, a mutated homo sapien that is said to be selected by God and will eventually become the destruction of mankind, possesses two horns in their heads, and has a "sixth sense" which gives it telekinetic abilities. Due to this dangerous power, they have been captured and isolated in laboratories by the government. Lucy, a young and psychotic Diclonius, manages to break free of her confines and brutally murder most of the guards in the laboratory, only to get shot in the head as she makes her escape. She survives and manages to drift along to a beach, where two teenagers named Kouta and Yuka discovers her. Having lost her memories, she was named after the only thing that she can now say, "Nyuu," and the two allow her to stay at Kouta's home. However, it appears that the evil "Lucy" is not dead just yet...

Is it just me, or is this a bit redundant?

And I own Lain as well...it's one of my favorites, along with Kino's Journey (which I bought recently), Perfect Blue, and the original Ghost in the Shell movie.

                      Re: The anime topic.

Lain's story is confusing because it's not very well laid-out. I mean, c'mon, they only way out of it they could think of was a world reset. I like Lain and own it, but I'd recommend Paranoia Agent or Boogiepop Phantom over it in a heartbeat. Paranoia Agent may be similarly confusing, but it at least has higher production values and a more interesting story. Boogiepop is simultaneously more complicated, yet more straight-forward than either of them, but the art is a little on the "ehhhhhh" side. Thanks, Korea.

Jin-Roh is awwwwwwwwwwesome. The last cel-animated feature film anime, I believe. The artwork is outstanding and the story is haunting, although they slap you in the face with the central metaphor a few billion times. Like, we get it already.

I recently bought Requiem from the Darkness, which has been okay so far, but seems to only really have one or two types of stories. And the animation is usually pretty damn cheap, although the art direction makes it look fairly unique. Not bad for something I got at half-price, I'd say.

Lain is one of my favorite anime series

It is hard to understand, but it can be looked at as a goddess realizing who she is.

Boogie-pop Phantom is very good, and the manga is out now, volume 1. I would defintally check out both.

It's cheaper just to get the Boogiepop novel. The manga is just a re-telling of the first novel split into two volumes.

Well, with AR Max EVO, you can do that region X thing. But yeah, I think the one I was going to buy (along with every other one on Ebay) was region 0. I've never even seen a real copy....anyone know where I could find it? Like, a good site for finding legit untranslated anime?

I love Jin-Roh:The Wolf Brigade. I just have the bare bones dvd release but plan on getting the 2 disc set soon.

I also enjoy Patlabor. The first two movies were great, and the third (more of a spin off really), WXIII, was great in an 'X-Files investigation kinda way'.

I also have the OVA. Im not into the Patlabor tv series all that much.

Im shopping around for the new dvd sets of the first two patlabor movies.

I want to check out Gasaraki, though I've heard its kind of an NGE ripoff.
