    Frustrating forgetfulness

Don't you hate it when you mostly remember something but you just can't recall the details for the life of you?

I've been trying my darnedest to find the title of a sci-fi short story that came to mind recently. I read it years ago in an anthology and I remember the story pretty well but not the title or author or the name of the anthology. I do remember the cover picture of it but that's not very useful. I thought it was written by Asimov but I can't find anything that seems like it reading through summaries of his stories. It's very frustrating because I'd love to find the story so I could read it again. I hate when stuff like this happens to my enfeebled brain.

... I hate it when you're going to do something, but then when you go to go do it you completely forget what you were going to do.
    1) Statement 2 is true
    2) Statement 1 is false

We can try and help; can you give us more to go on?

Oh yeah, maybe somebody here would recognize the story. There's an idea. HA. It would be more productive than just complaining about my lack of memory. So okay here's the story as I remember it.

These scientists discover what they believe is a rift through time. They make a machine to stabilize it and they can see through it like a window. They see a house with a family from the colonial era or something like that. I remember they sent an orange through the window to see if they could send objects through. One of the scientists spends all his time watching the family and becomes obsessed with wishing he was living in that simpler time until he finally jumps in. The family comes out and surrounds him then they turn into reptilian creatures and eat him. One of them turns and stares at the scientists through the "window" which is shocking becuase they thought it couldn't be seen from the other side. Panicked they shut off the machine but then a something gets tossed in from the other world. So they realize they opened a window that goes both ways but they can only control this side and the man eating lizard people could come through at any time.

So yeah if anybody knows that story and could tell me the title and author I'd really appreciate it.
