Help with avatars

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble putting a avatar up. The file I want to use as my avatar is 98 by 100 pixels but it still won't let me use it because it says it's too large. It says the maximum size is 20000 bytes. I have no idea what this means :/ Any help would be appreciated ^^

Also it's 28.7K, is that too big? lol sorry if this is a obvious question >< If it is too big is it possible to make it smaller?

20k is the file size limit.

re-size it, or re-save it at a lower quality setting.

I made it 14K and it still won't work its 71 by 70 pixels lol ><

Ok I got it to work It wasn't in the right format I guess so I put it in .png and it worked lol :/
