Re: UK court says Playstation is NOT a computer.
Um, I thought it was a Computer Entertainment System?
It's a computer to me. Just not what one would normally think when they hear "computer".
*EDIT: Read the article. Yeah, it's not THAT kind of computer. Idiots.Last edited by Riotsword; 06-21-2006, 12:42 AM.

Yeah, it's not going to shut them up about the whole "PS3 is a computer" bit, because in they can still use it as a marketing ploy, just not to bypass taxes. Sure, it'll make the PS3 even more expensive. It doesn't make that much difference, though, becasue it's already the most expensive system.Last edited by tjoris9; 06-21-2006, 02:21 AM.

Crunk, you must have lost count. It is at least strike 103.
This seems like one of these situations that I wonder, "Why the **** are the courts involved?" Hell, I could have come up with that verdict in 3.2 seconds.I had to change accounts. I'm here now - http://www.pavilionboards.com/forum/member.php?u=1475

Re: UK court says Playstation is NOT a computer.
Well I don't know, while it's not a PC the term computer actually encompasses a lot of things. Really most modern game systems could be considered computers, just specialized ones that only run certain software, and have proprietary hardware (similar to a Mac, though not quite as powerful). Most consoles now have operating systems, and include common PC parts like a harddrive. So while it's not as versatile as a PC it still is a computing machine, and technically contains all the same parts as a computer (motherboard, CPU, memory, GPU, I/O, even PC inputs like USB). So it is a computing machine, I mean the term computer was used to describe air speed indicators (kind of like a slide rule) back in WWI days. Of course the functionality is more simlar to a Kioske or a PDA, but really Gaming Computer, or even Media PC could fit todays modern consoles. Since a Media PC is nothing more than a harddrive, processor and video outputs.
So PC, no. Computer, probably, it'll definitly have more computing power than a lot of PCs older than 4 years or so. Really the only thing keeping it from being a computer is installable software, but you can run a full version of Linux on the PS2 (with the harddrive, and a usb keyboard and mouse), and PS3 I believe will have the same deal, since they mentioned the possibility of homebrew games (since they are using a variant of OpenGL and Cg for pixel and vertex shaders). So really this would make it almost a PC. So I think the UK court should look a bit further in their decision, though not just for the PS3, since 360 runs a version of Windows I believe now, and I'm sure someone will eventually find a way to port Linux to it (since people port linux to everything). So for all intents and purposes it could be used as a light PC if you were able to store files and programs on it.
So if we go by common use then yeah it's not a PC, I have never typed a document or used my game systems for work other than making a game on RPG Maker 2 and 1, but if you go by specs and possible use then it is by all means a computer.Last edited by thetruecoolness; 06-21-2006, 03:14 AM.
