    Animated favicon.ico files!!??!!??

    Hey, web designers:

I don't know how this happened. I just wanted to share this for those of us who marvel at such things.

I bookmarked the Photobucket page that hosts the animated Peace sign smiley I made

When I open the page or look at my bookmarks menu, it is the favicon!

    Have a look:

    It's a gif file!!

    It's 24 x 24... not 16 x 16!!

I did not think something like that was possible!!

    Just sharing.

I was using the new Firefox browser.

I tried it on Internet Explorer.

    No Go.

Here is a quick video for those who can't see it!

The hourglass cursor is from the screen capture program running.

I'm curious if this can be duplicated, or if it is just a glitch.

    Have fun.

    MOO!

That's completely awesome! Too bad I don't have Firefox...

Nope, no firefox here. I know some other web pages I go to are supposed to include a special icon like that, but they almost never show up (as in, I think I've seen it happen only two or three times).

Yeah firefox has this new thing where when you goto a picture link, the favicon is also the picture, of course since the beginning Firefox has had the favicon thing, and I would imagine IE7 probably will as well, though I will be sticking with Firefox. But the picture thing just came around version 1.5 or so.

If you are able to edit the <head> tag of you pages add this to it

        <LINK REL="shortcut icon" HREF="http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b41/Rodak/peace.gif">

to make it the favicon of your page.

          WOW!

I knew that code, and used it before, but the Tutorial where I found it said that it only worked with 16 x 16 .ico files!

Good to know it works with other files too.

          Thanks!!

Yeah it does (wasn't actually sure it would). So I guess it just resizes images now to fit. I tested it out with a local html file I had. I would imagine you would want to keep the image kind of small though to limit bandwith usage, but that goes for every image.

That is really cool. If I were to have a website, that would be pretty useful (since I can't make .ico files).
